Try to be a research associate with a MD in the specialty that you want to
get in. Do observership while working in his lab. Once you get into industry
, you have less connection with the medicine world.

Agree. A big cow MD boss who supports your goal is much better than double
99 scores.

situation

Connection and strong LORs maybe the most important things for getting interviews for Match.
Different people have different characters. Put your feet in your boss'
shoes, what would you boss, possibly a research nerd, think about your plan
after you tell him? Is it possible that you win his support? Can your enthusiasm for medicine convince him or other MDs to gain their support? Everybody knows it's time consuming to take USMLE exams for IMGs.
If yes, tell him. If not at current stage, work to show your responsibility, study hard to get good scores. After the exams and experience of the stress, you would know better about your determination or chance to pursue a career in clincial medicine. You may be have a better postion to tell him frankly and get observation opportunities. Generally, MD boss is nice. most of the mentors hope their trainees have better careers.

If your current MD boss is running out of funding, how can you keep staying
in his lab? Do you have a good relationship with your current MD boss? Do
you think he will give you a strong recommendation letter? If the answers
are yes, you should stay in your current lab and take your USMLE without
telling your boss. After all, no boss will be happy if they find out that
the people they hire do not have their mind on the job. Imagine if you were
the boss, you would not be happy too, right? Once you pass all your exams,
then discuss with your boss about the possibility of doing an observership
with him. You need to assure him that doing an observership does not affect
your daily work. For example, if you go to the clinic with him in the
afternoon, then you need to go to the lab at night or the weekend to make it
up. If your boss provides you the observership, he is doing you a favor,
you need to pay him back by working your ass off for him. So called "no pain
, no gain" or "there is no free lunch in the world".
If you have to leave your current lab and if you can afford not to work, how
about studying for the exams full time and getting the observership and
recommendation letters through your MD friends? Some stay-home mom get
residency through this route.
If you have to look for a new job, then find those easy MD labs. Take your
exams without telling your new boss. But at the mean time, try to work hard
to gain the trust and appreciation from your new boss. Once you have a good
relationship with your boss, it is easier to gain his support.
Having said all that, but if your MD friends can get observership and good
recommendation letters for you and you just need a job to pay the bills
while you are taking the exams, then find an easy lab ( does not matter MD-
or Ph.D-run) and simply work 9-5.

release the news after you get a good step 1 score. don't wait for too long.
A pleasant surprise is still a surprise.
