A favorite question from Dr. Multz: "When is the last time you did lumbar puncture or blood gas draw?"
If you are asked often to repeat yourself, you are not speaking clearly, and you need to improve it. A big problem for CMG's spoken English is confusing "he" and "she". Remember gender!
Dr. Multz' view of USMLE scores: over 90 is good enough; three-digit score doesn't matter (until when two-digit score phases out); step 2 more important than step 1 since it is more clinically relevant. It is a red flag if your step 2 is >10 lower than step1 (talking about two-digit score).
You do need to have a sound plan B, and probably will be asked about it during interview to assess your insight. For example, in an IM interview it is probably bad to say that I will only do GI or cardio no matter what, because those are top hot subspecialties.
Do remember to follow up after interview, thank by letter or email to PD or PC or chairman, even if you get nothing to say.
Use "however" rather than "but", and use "mature" rather than "old".
Have big confidence to turn your maturity into an advantage. It is your life experience, makes you understand the medical business, and be responsible.
Prepare well for the weakness question. Definitely not talk about your real weakness. Accent cannot be your weakness.
这点在面试时就是,对于do you have any questions for me, you shall ask questions that lead to talking points about yourself.
Q. Does gap matter? Shall I take one year off to study step 1?
A. Better no gap. You shall do something every step of your way. Raising child is a good reason to take off a year though.
If you do take time off to study for exams, you can spin it in a positive way: "because I understand the importance of this exam..."
Get separate PS and letters for each specialty, and make sure that no letter says something like "XXX is applying to IM/pathology". Don't tell anyone on interview track. 不过,listing multiple observerships in different specialties is ok.
A. ICU nurse is a big positive because it shows interaction with doctors at a high level, but ambulatory nursing work is not really impressive, yet it is still better than no clinical experience at all.
A. 同上,don't ask, don't tell.
Q. How to answer "where else have you interviewed?"
