里面讲到 "medicine is not a science"
"Medicine is not a science. Medicine is a practical endeavor whose
objective is to do the best for the patient. While obtaining knowledge is
frequently necessary, knowledge in itself is never the goal of medicine.
In fact, the good clinician must always balance the benefits of diagnostic
testing against the costs, time and risks that come with it. Because of
the need to act before it is too late, uncertainty must be tolerated. The
clinician must have a basic knowledge of the broad scope of medical
science, but rarely has time to go into great depth."

All assumptions could end up wth wrong diagnosis. It happens all the time.

. If you think medicine only involve in diagnosis and treatment, medicine is
probably not science. It only uses the results of scientific studies. If
you think medicine also includes understanding the underlying mechanism of
diseases and study about the effectiveness of medication and treatment, I
think medicine is science. |

我想这么说比较好： medicine is not only the science。
记得我做resident时， 医院院长最爱说的就是， Patients coming to hospital are
not for physicians but hospital services.
这么说有他的道理。 但没有医生到医院去， 他的医院开得下去吗？
这帮老家伙其实就是别出心裁， 语不惊人死不休。 不要太认真了。

testable explanation and predictions.
Medicine is not science. If someone practice medicine with scientific rigor,
he will be hated by residents and laughed by his collegues although be
loved by medical students. |

art. It is like the blind man and the elephant. Science and art are not
exclusive. :-)
Full disclosure: No offense to anyone. It is just a metaphor. No one is
blind here.
