3 years ago, my town and many neighboring towns were hit by a big snow storm
. it took a week to get power back. I tried all different things without a
power generator, including cooking from a gas stove, using fireplace, etc. I
even bought a power inverter to power on my gas water boiler (for heating)
from my car. that plan failed shamelessly after the cigarette lighter fuse
burned out :( I bought a power generator a year later, but power outage like
this has never happened again.

what's most important is you need to have a car (and a gas can); if you
happen to have a (natural) gas stove, you worry even less.

ever thought abt that? u gonna build a in ground gas tank in our yard?
don't be naive, shit may hit the fan any time given the current world we
live in. movies are not too far off on some scenarios. better be prepared,
Jose, if not materially at least mentally and psychologically.

in fact, one can be killed tomorrow in a traffic accident. its likelihood is
not as low as one gets stuck in a long-term freezing winter power-outage
without cash, without gas, without a car, without a friend, without natural
gas appliance, or even without essential supplies to stay alive. So, stop
worrying about something that is not likely to happen! when shit happens,
deal with it.

nothing wrong with little spatter here.
when we talk abt disaster, albeit natural or man-made, sometimes we need to
see a bit of big picture, take ourselves out of the comfort zone we have
been growing so used to. get out of cocoon, like they say. with the
falsified sense of rights and security so deeply rooted into our minds, we
may have forgotten how the world evolved into today's status.

not sure what you meant by "comfort zone we ... used to".
in fact, the world we used to was much harsher, perhaps many of us forgot
that because we live in a better life now. people of my age surely remember
the regular power outages when we were still young. there was no heating, no
power generator, no car, no cell phone, no snow plow, not even shelter or
appropriate social facilities. but we have all survived, happily. so, no
big deal if we are out of power again.
