Both free.
Virtual machine basic functions:
- Vmware player allow 64bit linux on 32bit XP (may need bios setup)
- Virtualbox has smaller footprint and shorter wake-up time from sleep
- Virtualbox allow full install from installation cd, Vmware player need some work-around (refer previous article)
- Virtualbox crashed once when I tried to install the guest side tools on a puppy distribution. VMware haven't crash yet.

i thought vm player is a player or client program, didn't know it is a
server...
am using vbox, so far so good

VirtualBox/VirtualPC

machine platform software called "server" and the guest OS called "client"?
VM player is supposed to "play" the vmware image created by other versions.
However it is not difficult to use it to boot up from an installation CD and
install a Linux from scratch.

This file has a 2G disk, which could be too small, so you may also google
blank vmdk
to add some bigger disks.

It is fine to use vmware's image under vbox, so I think the other way around
should be fine too...
