输入汉字倒是可以显示，telnet mitbbs.com 就不行

但是在 gedit 里用 UTF8 输入，然后贴到 firefox 里是对的。 |

change character encoding on the fly, such as gedit. I am surprised you have
missed this feature.

gedit only "save as" in different encoding,
cannot change on the fly...
there is a tools\set language option, which is totally different...
I don't even see Chinese listed there...
