In the second section of the Metaphysics of Morals
Kant draws the following distinction:
In the realm of ends everything has either a price or
a dignity. Whatever has a price can be replaced by
something else as its equivalent; on the other hand,
whatever is above all price and therefore admits of
no equivalent, has dignity. (Kant, 1990 [1785]: 51)
Could we say therefore that communism is a metaphysics of dignity? That each
person, singular in universality, is above all price and has no equivalent?
Karatani: Yes, you put it beautifully. I regret that I
did not quote this phrase in the book. |
