Sarah Fong, who is an Action Council Member, is looking for Mandarin-
speaking volunteers to 1) outreach to families during the week of
November 15th and 2) assist with workshops for middle school students
and their families on three Saturdays (November 20th, December 4th, and
December 18th). Volunteers do not need to commit all dates unless
they’d like to. Sarah works at Computers for Youth (CFY), a nonprofit
organization that provides underserved middle school students and their
parents with a free computer in order to improve the home learning
environment. They started a program with John J. Pershing Middle School
in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, which has nearly 400 sixth graders and 2/3 of
whom are Mandarin-speaking students. To serve the families effectively,
CFY needs Mandarin-speaking volunteers. More details are below. I
would greatly appreciate if you could forward this message to your
contacts and/or contact Sarah (s***[email protected]) directly if you’d like to
volunteer. I will forward this message to our member agencies. Thank
you!

About Computers for Youth
Computers for Youth (CFY) is a national educational nonprofit
organization whose mission is to help low-income middle school students
do better in school by improving their learning environment at home. In
order to do this, we target middle schools in low income communities and
offer all sixth graders and their parents a free computer-based home
learning center filled with engaging educational software. CFY holds
Family Learning Workshops (FLW) on Saturdays at the children’s schools
to train the families on how to use their home learning centers, and
volunteers are vital to the success of these workshops.
Family Learning Volunteers: How You Help
Volunteers are needed for our Family Learning Workshops, a unique event
where 120+ parents and their 6th grade children receive a computer, gain
instruction from a Family Trainer, then pack up and take it home! As a
Saturday volunteer, you will focus on helping by: exploring educational
games together, guiding the child and parent during the lesson, and
(most importantly) ensuring they have a positive, memorable experience.
No specialized computer skills are required; rather, we welcome anyone
with a desire to engage youth or support schools throughout NYC. Thanks
in great part to our Family Learning Volunteers, more than 90 percent of
parents report feeling more confident about helping their children learn
at home.
At CFY, we utilize volunteers at all of our workshops and greatly value
your work – it is a gift to both us and the families we serve. I am a
part of the implementation team at John J. Pershing Middle School in
Sunset Park Brooklyn, a school with a very specific volunteer need. This
is a large middle school with around 400 sixth graders, about 2/3 of
which are Mandarin-speaking students. Because we do not have full-time
staff who speak Mandarin, I am looking for volunteers who may be able to
assist us. It is incredibly important to me, and the rest of the team,
to find Mandarin-speaking volunteers so that we can fully serve these
families.
What are we looking for? We are looking for two types of volunteers
leading up to and during our FLW at John J. Pershing
1) Outreach Volunteers: These volunteers will assist us in making
outreach calls to John J. Pershing families. This role has a major
effect on the number of families that turn out for the FLW and is
critical to the success of our program.
The Details:
ü Where: Computers for Youth Main Office (520 8th Avenue, 10th Floor,
between 36th and 37th)
ü When: Evenings during the week of November 15th
2) Saturday Volunteers: These volunteers will work directly with
students and families on the day of the FLW.
We have asked the school to provide teachers who can interpret the FLW
training materials. The training will be taught in a bilingual fashion
with a CFY Family Trainer presenting the materials in English while a
school staff member interprets into Mandarin. To be clear, we are NOT
asking volunteers to present or teach any of the curriculum. Volunteers
are asked to be present in the classroom to answer any questions that
families may have, to ensure that families are not getting lost or
confused, and to generally be an extra set of eyes and ears.
The Details:
ü Where: John J. Pershing Middle School (4812 9th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY
11220)
ü When: November 20th, December 4th, and December 18th (We are looking
for volunteers who can come to any of these dates. You do not have to
commit to all three dates unless you would like to)
ü Time: AM session (8:00am - 12:30pm) and/or PM session (11:30am -
4:45pm)
Your help is particularly important at John J. Pershing as you will play
a critical role in helping our families understand the materials that we
have prepared. With the assistance of volunteers like you, we are
certain we will be able to serve our Mandarin-speaking families in a way
that is effective and meaningful for them.
Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering in either of the
roles described above.
