I am writing to introduce you to a formal prefix that we are adding and
welcoming to our community language: Mx. (pronounced mix). Typically, we
have been using three gender prefixes when referring to adults: Mr., Mrs.,
and Ms. These prefixes limit the gender expression of individuals by forcing
them to choose between masculine-only or feminine-only descriptors.
The prefix Mx. (pronounced mix) allows adults to be called by a formal title
without having to select a masculine-only or feminine-only title. In use,
for example, "Mr. Jones" would be written as "Mx. Jones" and pronounced "Mix
Jones."
As we enter into the school year, we will be asking our adults to let all of
us know which prefix they prefer. We anticipate that many will still use
masculine-only (Mr.) or feminine-only (Ms. or Mrs.) prefixes. However,
adding Mx. (pronounced mix) will be another option for our adults to choose. |
