Subject: Inquiry of a supporting letter from you
Dear Prof. XXX,
This is XXX, the former student of Dr. XXX at University of XXX. During
my days in the XXX lab, I did XXX (my major achievements). Here I'm writing
this letter to inquire about the possibility of receiving a supporting
letter toward my US green card application from you.
As I have settled and started my research career in the US, I plan to
file permanent residency ("green card") under the category of Alien of
Extraordinary Ability. Under this classification, I need to submit evidence
to the US government establishing my qualifications as an outstanding
researcher. Such evidence includes a number of supporting letters from
experts in the same field of research.
According to the US immigration policy, they require letters from
independent experts who either do not know me personally or have never
worked with me on any projects. Since you are the leader in the XXX field,
and also have kindly cited my 2007 XXX paper (title) a few times, I am
wondering, may I have a letter from you as an independent expert? A letter
addressed to USCIS and commenting on my past research work is enough and
would be greatly appreciated. I do understand that you are extremely busy
and your time is very valuable. If you don't mind, my lawyer and I can
prepare a letter draft and you can modify it to your satisfaction. And I
promise your letter would be ONLY used for my green card application and
would not be used for other purpose.
Please let me know whether you are willing to help me out in this
process. And I will completely understand if you decline since you are
extremely busy.
