OK, I am building someone else's designs. I don't have the knowledge or
equipment to design my own speaker yet. I am not gonna bother telling you
what designs I am using since there are tons of free designs online. the
ones I choose are nothing particular. but basically right now I am building
a pair of 3.5-way towers for my 5.1 project and a pair of small bookshelves
as a gift to some friends. later on I will build a center which matches the
towers. If I like the small bookshelves, I may build

Bought the plywood for the bookshelf speakers today from lowes. this batch
has incredible quality. I didn’t see a single void. The veneer on one side
is blond wood, super high quality, on the other side is lower grade brich
with eyes that actually look very interesting. I had the 4'*8' piece cut to
sizes at lowes that I will be using. And I was very lucky that the gentleman
who did it for me was very good and patient. The cuts are near perfect.

I experimented with some sizes for the tweeters on a piece of scrap wood.
The result is near perfect. Note the tweeter is not sitting flush because of
the foam on the back of the faceplate.

an update: the boxes are finished with a glossy clear-coat. It has been two
days but the Polyurethane is still not hardened in the garage. so I am
laying them our in the sun right now. hopefully I can assemble everything
tonight and start breaking in the speakers.

finished the bookshelf speakers Friday. has been breaking them in. so far so
good. my wife was pretty surprised by the how good looking the speakers
turned out that she wants to keep them (OK, she may have a low expectation
for "home made" speakers). and we are both impressed with the performance.
aside from noticably better resolution, there is truely nothing standing out
, which is what I thought what speakers are supposed to be.

As a personal preference, I liked silk dome tweeters better than metal (Al

both silk domes and metal domes have pros and cons. metal domes tend to have

soft domes tend to have smooth and extended frequency response but higher

Dude, I know what you are sayin.
An option for the front grill.
I bought a pair of Meridian A500 speakers without the grills. The original
speaker design, I was told, had a cloth with a rubber/elastic band so you
can put it on with tbe elastic band go into the groove.
So, I just bought speaker cloth at Amazon.com and rubber strings(for holding
window screens) from HomeDepot and squeezed it into the groove to hold the
cloth. So cheap, functional, and easy grills were in place now, as you see

Thanks for the suggestion! that would be about the only way I would accept a
grill. but the thing is, it would touch the woofer surrounds and
definitely won't work with a mid-dome. the best way is a design like the
vandersteen speakers, whose designs I am actually quite fond of.

thanks for the good words. Building my first speakers really was a game
changer. Now I'm gonna sell off our IQ3 and AR94 since I can easily build
speakers a couple of notches better. I am currently investigating ways to
improve the strength and precession of the enclosure construction. that
might delay things a bit.

a quick update:
building even a small pair of enclosures turned out to be harder than I
thought. Towers will require much greater precision due to their size. I got
some great new tools - a table saw and a drill press - to achieve
satisfying results. Right now I am focusing on building jigs. Hopefully the
super exciting tower build will start next week.

an update:
all woodworking is done. I planned to stain the speakers Ebany, which is
basically black. but I don't really like the rather fakish color of stained
wood and the prestain I used on the speakers looked really pleasant to me.
so I just left them that way. I will apply three coats of polyurethane in
the next two days and build the Xovers adn test the drivers tomorrow. Sunday
will be the big day of gluing damping foam, soldering all joints, and
screwing everything together.
after that, ti

a picture update! things are looking good. these are after prestain, but
before polyurethane (clear coat). I think the prestain increase the contrast
in the wood gain, making me decide not apply ebony stain. I tried to finish
the xovers tonight. but the zip ties I bought were too short on some bigger
components. I hate it when that happens. will finish the xover assembly and
driver testing tomorrow. I am getting more and more anxious to finish them
and give them a listen.

this is a detail picture after the first coat of polyurethane applied. It
made the wood color very rich and sophisticated. hard wood has that
shine soft wood simply don't have I love it. I love it. all the wood
work really make the speakers look good. but it's just hard to make
everything perfect, especially with plywood. moving the router a little too
quick the big round over bit took some chunks off the corner. that speaker
was perfect in everyway other wise. anyway, at this stage, I really d

plywood is it. and it's light and stiff, which means higher resonate
frequency (above 2khz if well braced). There is not enough energy to
excite the resonate frequency in music.
MDF is much more uniform/consistent and has the lowest contraction. but it
just doesn't sound good as good because it's heavy and flexy, which
translate to lowered resonate frequency (to below 50hz). This can lead to a
dead feel in sound. The reason most commercial speakers are made of MDF is
that it's easy to work with

it is definitely too bright with the default tweeter resister. luckily have
