The following two reports are part of a one-off section "South Korea Report"
in WAll Street Journal (WSJ), Nov. 8, 2010 in commemoration of the nation's
host of incomig G-20.
(1) Jung-Ah Lee, In the Lead—and Trying to Stay There; Samsung is placing
its bets on cutting-edge display technology. WSJ, Nov. 8, 2010.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703673604575550032739313758.html
Quote:
(a) Regarding OLED.
"Screens with organic light emitting diodes, or OLED, have a thin layer of
organic material that glow, creating the screen's backlighting.
"Samsung Mobile Display, a joint venture of Samsung Electronics and sister
company Samsung SDI Co., currently dominates the market for OLED screens
used in mobile phones, with more than a 95% share.
"But Samsung's goal is to make OLED for products with bigger screens, such
as tablet PCs and televisions * * * The major stumbling block: Large OLED
displays are costly and technically difficult to make.
(b) Regarding active matrix OLED.
"Lee Woo-jong, vice president of marketing at Samsung Mobile Display, says
Samsung is 'the only company that has succeeded in mass production of active
-matrix OLED displays.'
Note:
(a) Organic light-emitting diode
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_light-emitting_diode
(section 2 Working principle)
Quote:
OLED "is a light-emitting diode (LED) in which the emissive
electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compounds which emit light in
response to an electric current. This layer of organic semiconductor
material is situated between two electrodes. Generally, at least one of
these electrodes is transparent.
"OLED displays can use either passive-matrix (PMOLED) or active-matrix
addressing schemes. Active-matrix OLEDs (AMOLED) require a thin-film
transistor backplane to switch each individual pixel on or off, and can make
higher resolution and larger size displays possible.
(2) Kyong-Ae Choi, Charging Ahead; LG Chem is becoming a global leader in
building batteries for the new generation of electric vehicles. WSJ, Nov. 8,
2010.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703843804575534010740256140.html
My comment:
(a) Read the first question and answer.
(b) The sixth Q & A:
"WSJ: Do you see any threat from China in the rechargeable-battery business?
"MR. KIM: China is still at the toddler stage in the rechargeable-battery
business. The business is not easy as safety is at stake. We have come so
far, having some difficulties. Time, technology and capital are essential in
this business.

If you said that, I cannot recall. In any event, I never pay attention to
whatever you say.
Assuming you did say that, you has lived in another planet all the while. In
any event, you are not a tech person, losing touch with the real world to
boot.
China has been buying electronics from Taiwan, as well as S Korea. Please
consult (7)(b) of my posting titled Economics News Today (dated Nov. 10,
2010; Chinanews board).
http://mitbbs.com/article0/ChinaNews/32232497_0.html
We appreciate the business. But Chinese (from PRC) are no dummies: if
products of Taiwan are not superb, they (Chiese) will not buy from Taiwan.
賠錢的生意沒人做. Period.
(1) The following is old news.
Taiwan’s LCD Panel Market: Country Intelligence, MAIT, August 2008.
http://www.mait.com/admin/enews_images/MAIT%20Country%20Intelligence%20eNews98.pdf
("In just nine years Taiwan's global market share for flat panel displays
climbed from 1% to 50%, making Taiwan the world's uncontested leader
in flat panel display production.")
Note: MAIT is acronym of Manufacturers' Association for Information
Technology (set up in 1982 and based at New Delhi, India).
(2) iSuppli Releases Report on Taiwan LCD Market in 1Q 2010. iSuppli, May 17
, 2010 (Report).
http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0199-12751457/iSuppli-Releases-Report-on-Taiwan.html
My comment: iSuppli allows only subsribers to read it in its web site. But
the press release can be viewed at
http://www.brandingtaiwan.org/activity_news_detail.aspx?sn=505
(in 1Q10 "Taiwan's LCD revenues surged 125% to NT$273 billion (US$8.7
billion) from NT$121 billion in the same period a year ago")
(3) On the front of LCD television:
(a) Vizio is doing well in the US market, head-to-head with Samsung.
(b) On Oct. 20, 2010 Taiwan-based Digitimes reported Sony to source half of
its (high-end by definition) LCD TV to Foxconn and Wistron. Seven days later
(Oct. 27), another report cropped up, saying that Sony would also outsource
LCD TV to AU Optronics also.
(4) On the front of car devices that use LCD:
TFT LCD Shipments for Automotive Applications Indicate Strong Rebound.
DisplaySearch, Oct. 26, 2010.
http://www.displaysearch.com/cps/rde/xchg/displaysearch/hs.xsl/101026_tft_lcd_shipments_for_automotive_applications_indicate_strong_rebound.asp
("Shipments of TFT LCDs for portable navigation devices (PND) and automotive
monitors (used in car navigation and in-console monitors) increased in the
second half of 2009 and first half of 2010")
Figure 2: TFT LCD Manufacturers Market Share by Region for Automotive
Monitor & Portable Navigation Devices (1H’10):
[The left panel:] PND Shipment Share
Taiwan 63%
Korea 19%
Japan 9%
China 8%
[The right panel:] Automotive Monitor Shipment Share
Japan 70%
Taiwan 16%
Korea 8%
China 6%
