Documents Required to Buy a Firearm
Long guns (Rifles, Shotguns, Receivers)
1. Current CADL or CA Id Card. Expired or temporary paper licenses are not
acceptable per ATF or CA DOJ.
2. If your CADL does not have your current residential address on it, you
need to provide a second government ID with your current address printed on
it (i.e. vehicle registration, dmv print-out, government utility bill,
property tax bill, tax document from IRS). DMV brown “change of address”
cards are not acceptable.
3. If you are a resident or nonimmigrant alien, you will need your ID card
or I-94 document and hunting license.
Handguns
1. Current CADL or CA Id Card. Expired or temporary paper licenses are not

2. 2nd proof of residency that matches your CADL address (i.e. current
utility bill, lease/rental agreement, property deed, vehicle registration or
government issued license with your address printed on it). No cell phone
bills, garbage bills, fishing licenses or hunting licenses.
3. If your CADL does not have your current residential address on it, you
need to provide a second government ID with your current address printed on
it (i.e. vehicle registration, dmv print-out, government utility bill,
property tax bill, tax document from IRS). DMV brown “change of address”
cards are not acceptable.
4. Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) card. You will need one if buying a
handgun. If you do not have one, the State fee for the test is $25. Here is
the study guide: http://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/pdfs/firearms/forms/hscsg.pdf If you are an LEO, active duty military or have one of the other HSC exemptions, please be sure to have appropriate ID.
5. If you are a resident or nonimmigrant alien, you will need to bring your
ID card or I-94 document and hunting license.
PLEASE NOTE: It is a Federal offence to purchase a gun for someone who can
’t. It is also a crime to attempt to purchase a firearm if you are
prohibited from owning one.
