An Austin police officer is on administrative leave after a fight between
two men forced him to fire his gun.
It happened at the Onion Creek Apartments off Slaughter Lane in Southeast
Austin around 3 a.m. Saturday.
A witness told police two men were arguing and one had a gun.
Police tasered one of the men after he refused to show his hands.
Investigators said the man then reached into his waistband, and that's when
the officer fired two shots.
No one was injured and both suspects were arrested.

Front-line police, who wish to remain anonymous, have told The Advertiser
some officers would risk internal disciplinary action by firing warning
shots to control an armed offender.
Police tactical orders say a firearm can be drawn only if there is imminent
danger to life to police or civilians.
Discharging a firearm can occur only when a life is threatened and when all
other tactics have failed.
The orders do not permit shooting to wound or prevent offenders from
escaping.
However, some men and women officers charged with protecting the community
and each other say there is not enough time in a lethal confrontation to
remember all the rules.
"I think there's merit in law enforcement for firing warning shots and that'
s the general feeling among more seasoned police," an officer with more than
10 years' service said.
