Missing kayaker found dead in Brazos River
By boat, air and land, Hill County rescue crews searched for 52-year old
Raymond Niklaus of Hearne.
"We're looking for a chance. We'll hold on to that chance 'til there's no
hope left," Captain Larry Armstrong of the Hill County Sheriff's Office said
Tuesday morning.
Niklaus was reported missing Monday evening. He and six friends came to the
Brazos River near the Lake Whitney Dam to fly fish. Niklaus was a diabetic,
recovering from pneumonia. But he was looking forward to this trip.
"He had planned on this fishing trip for quite a while. He told his sister
when they left that he wasn't going to miss his fishing trip even though he
didn't feel 100 percent, but he came fishing anyway," Armstrong says.
The Army Corps of Engineers started to release water from the dam Monday
evening. Niklaus stayed in, his friends came out.
"I don't know their level of expertise in the kayaking, maybe he was really
good and they weren't that concerned about him," says Armstrong.
Around 12:00 noon Tuesday, 18 hours after he was reported missing, a
helicopter found Niklaus' body about 10 feet from the shore.
"He was in a kayak that has a seat that sets up above it," explains
Armstrong. "That would make the, that boat itself a little top heavy. He
could have bent over, fallen out, it's hard to say since no one saw it."
But investigators say it was an accident that could have been prevented.
Niklaus had a life jacket in his kayak, but he wasn't wearing it.
"Going alone is bad enough, but going alone without a life jacket, you're
just asking for trouble," adds Armstrong.
The Army Corps of Engineers is trying to prevent these types of accidents at
Lake Whitney this summer. They installed life jacket stations, stocked with
life jackets, free for anyone to use when they need them. | s****y

两个多月前，这边一个tract也有人出意外。出事者一个人船钓，那天风大气温
低，都穿了life jacket，没用，trolling motor在自动档，人掉水里，船还继续往
前跑，人追不上船，没多久冻淹死了。

trolling motor的就没绑，然后就悲剧了。
是在海里吗？看来还得去人多的地方钓鱼。

这个比较土鳖,没穿救生衣就认了.看来还得穿wetsuit.

起白帽的大浪，低于五十度的水温，那种恶劣气候里，自救是不可能的，唯一能做的是
抓紧时间，在没被冻傻之前掏出手机求救。
经验教训是，没手机信号的地方一个人别去，船钓的时候把手机zip好防水，搁贴胸口
袋里，遇到紧急情况能随手掏出来，兜里再有几个信号蛋，那就更好了。这比起你的傻
练铁人n项提高身体素质的说法，实用多了。

但涨潮退潮时某些地方可能有current.
手机也没用,还是有个能自动发送GPS信号的海事电台管用.

上一个著名ID,高手Hook-Sinker&Line (HSL).十几天前他就在发贴招兵买马,组织去
Brazos River搞一次Kayak fly fishing. 正好两星期前我也刚买了个钓鱼用的KAYAK,
还琢磨是否入伙去玩玩呢. 后来觉得道行尚浅,不足以跟高手们玩,就没有去. 但是这两
个周末都是自己找湖去kayak fishing了,比如Somerville, Conroe.
周二就看见他们报道,去了十一个人,回来十个人. 不幸遇难的那个RAY没有穿PFD(
personal floating device). 这也是一个非常大的教训,尤其是对于刚玩KAYAK的人来
说.死的都是会家子.老玩家. |
