twice. it was never easy though -- i've been rejected 5+ times. i guess you
just have to try harder.

but the weird thing is, there is no feedback for a rejected google proposal,
so you really don't know how to improve the next time around. in this case,
you can talk to your google contacts, and they might give you some insider'
s perspective.
anyway, the good things about the google award are
1) it's much less work than NSF: only 3 pages of proposal.
2) the acceptance rate, though already very low, is still slightly higher
than that of NSF. it used to be much easier when it first started; now it
has become extremely competitive because everybody knows it.
3) the amount of money is much bigger than it looks like since your school
can not charge overhead on it (in most schools, yes, though my previous "
qipa" school did charge some overhead).
4) there are two cycles per year (used to be 4).
