person gave me exactly the same reply. The chair told me there was no
discussion/controversy about who was the top candidate at all. Why do people
read too much into
these things.

a big fight. He offered you the position, making you feel bad or
suspicious
on who was against you will do no good to anyone.

receive oral offer and I simply asked how certain the offer is, and then he
said there was not really any different opinions, so he would not anticipate
any problem. If there had been "discussions," he could simply have said "I
think it's pretty certain" Of course I was not asking a question such as "
were there discussions/different opinions?"
Anyway, if I wrote to any candidate saying "hope our career paths will
cross again," at least I wouldn't be indicating anything. And why on earth
would anyone on the committee try to insinuate anything to the applicant
when a final decision/announcement has not been made? Even if the professor
does feel negatively about the applicant, s/he would have refrained from
making any suggestions in the email. As you say, what good does that do?
