"contract" means that it can end after some years, or sooner, you'll never
know.
"tenured" means that you have this job for ever. However, I guess that you
are probably on a tenure-track, then you need to pass the evaluation to get
your tenure. 6 years is typical, and there are mid-evaluation every two or
three years.
If you can choose, a tenure track position is better.
