i called them to negotiate everything.
I asked for an increase of 20K, they agreed an increase of 5K only.
I lower my request to 15K, they said they need to ask school dean. school
dean later agreed on an increase of 10K, making it an 8% increase.

For the first three years only. and this salary is typical in my field.
I don't want to show off this... so we can talk about something else. :-)
What I am suggesting is that we Chinese should negotiate more aggressively.
Statistics have shown that Asians and women negotiate less aggressively.
Especially some fresh phds. It may be the first time they receive a real
salary. So they tend to be satisfied with whatever offered to them. It
explains why there exist a huge salary gap later. It is confirmed in this
forum. This is especially true for our Chinese.
Always ask for more salary. It is expected that you do so. I read some
misleading posts here that some people thought they were satisfied with the
initial offer and did not ask for more at all. Even more, they discourage
others from negotiating on salary. I consider this misleading and
irresponsible. Let me explain why.
1. Not negotiating, you are actually lowering the salary for anyone else,
especially the followers.
2. The initial offer is usually lower than the average market salary because
the department expects that you negotiate. If you don't negotiate, the
department has not way to increase it. But the department wants you to be
happy. If you later find your salary is lower than others, you will be
unhappy and the department will be unhappy.
3. It may make the department question your credentials. I once talked with
a school dean. He told me that he was shocked by a Chinese new AP because
that guy accepted the offer as it is right away. The dean told me that his
first reaction was "what's going wrong?! did I not know something about this
guy?"
Just my two cents. Also, some people are so timid and they think they may
risk their offer if they negotiate aggressively, the department may think
him/her greedy. Let me tell you something I was told by a department chair
years ago: if you are so worried about how other people think of you, you
are crazy! Get balls!

I am happy for you that you get the salary you want, but the negotiation for
b-school faculty position could be quite different from the negotiation for
a natural sciences position where the size of startup package and lab space
are also very important and how well the lab does has a more significant
impact on the long term earning potential. of course we should negotiate,
but its simply a difference in priorities
