c***5 发帖数: 34 | 1 Could anyone tell me how important is the reference letter from current
mentor for looking for a faculty position? Because most of my work related
to the current position I am applying for is done in current lab, but I am
sure my current PI will not fully support me for this based on all the
people who left the lab did not get a good letter. |

c***5 发帖数: 34 | 4 Thanks for the reply. If I could find a letter from the professor who has
joint lab meeting with us, could this help? Maybe I have to talk with my
current PI first. |
G***y 发帖数: 1082 | 5 It's a hard situation. But you will risk your career if you don't tell your
boss about the application. He might get a call from the search committee
somewhere and may be REALLY not supportive if he found out that way.

M*****n 发帖数: 16729 | 6 you have no other choice but to face it.
I was in a similar situation as yours, but after talking to my mentor
explicitly about my career development, I found out that he was quite
considerate and supportive.
the simplest way to know it is to ask directly. |

be good enough. |
c***5 发帖数: 34 | 8 Thanks you all for suggestion. I went to talk with my PI last night. He
seems nice and my understanding is that he would like to support my career
development only if I would stay in the lab for a while.
But right now there is a chance asking for reference. I submitted CV and
cover letter 2 months ago to an university. I received email says"The Search
Committee is happy to consider you for this position. The next step in
this process would be for you to arrange to have three letters of reference
submitted via email to Dr. xxxx". Could anyone who has undergone the process
tell me does it means I passed the pre-screening step? Do I really need to
go ask my PI now? |
m**n 发帖数: 750 | 9 It means they are interested in your application. Whether you have passed
their first screening or not is not certain. However, to get their full
consideration, you need to have three reference letters to complete your
application.
