我是学文科的。 七八个电话面试无果后，接到这个Midwestern state 一个公立大学的
电话面试，周一早上电话面试，谈了十分钟的样子。下午得到系主任电话邀请到校园面
试。激动万分。当时商定的日子是下周三。
我马上投入准备。原以为要present dissertation. Three days later (Thursday)
the assistant dean email me ask me to give a class talk. I had to change to
present one of my paper which is relevant to the subject of the class.
I am very fortunate to have several faculty members who care about my job
searching. they offered to coach my job interview. So, on Friday afternoon.

I usually asked them to give me 20 - 30 minutes time for the preparation. Of
course, they don't like it since it makes it harder for them to schedule
the talk. But I felt it is so necessary. Since if there is anything wrong,
you have time for a backup plan.
At one school, I asked for a 20 minutes break before my talk. But they didn'
t schedule that. I had problems to hook up my computer with the project in
the beginning. The chair came and apologized. He said, he should arrange

其实面试的过程最重要的是建立 rapport, 在某些文科院系，是不是一个容易相处
的 colleague 可能比你 research 做的好不好更重要。毕竟文科专业的老师更加
注重人文方面的东西，比如沟通技巧，举止谈吐。有些时候连面试者的领带
鞋子开的玩笑都会成为讨论的一部分。归根结底，大家投不投这一票是看喜不喜欢
这个人。
偶有一个 colleague, 当时是面试四个人背景最弱的一个，当时开会的时候极有争议，
但是这个人曾经在偶们系做过 visiting scholar, 投赞成票的都是认识她的，
并且还都是这个方向的，所以最后还是要了。做了同事才知道人家真是最做人，
大方得体还特别 considerate, 作为同事，根本不关心她最后能不能拿到 tenure,
但是和她同事真是个 pleasure. 同理，偶也见过虽然 research 很强，但就是
说话很冲，很个人为中心，最后大家也没要，就像有人说的, I don't care how
good he/she is, I just don't feel comfortable working with h

发帖数: 879 | 4 这个skip one to one meeting, 绝对是一个最清楚不过的sign了。我这么说不是要让
lz难过。只是想让大家知道一点job interview的经验。无论是academic 还是industry
interview,如果临时schedule有大变动，cancle一些meeting，绝对是清楚地告诉你，
u r out.
在chronicle看到的，有个search committee写的经历。有个candidate上午的meeting
结束了还没有作talk，人家就把他送走了。那个candiate还挺高兴，觉得他太好了都不
需要给talk了。看看自我感觉是多么不可靠。反过来也有好的，自己觉得terrible，结
果却很好。
另外一个例子是我们公司招人。我就跟那个人在走廊拐角打了个照面，看穿得整整齐齐
，估计是interview。我只一眼就知道这人没系的。一点自信都没有。后来跟头儿谈起
来，老板说terrible。这个人是他的Ph.D.老板推荐来面世的。本来我们公司都是面试
一天的，结果中午吃完饭就把他送走了。不知道是找的什么借口。老板说不想浪费其他
人的时间了。 |
