The verb refute is used in two ways.
To refute something such as an allegation, a story, or a theory means to
prove that it is untrue or invalid:
Mr Justice Fennell said: `It was a wicked allegation to make, because
these allegations are easy to make but difficult to refute .'

The discovery of twin pandas in Sichuan province has refuted the
theory that only one of any pair of giant panda twins could survive.
