It might help your wife's case if she had left the US and come back with H4
visa BEFORE the submission of her 485.

If less than 180 days status violation, it is possible to leave the US and
return with a valid visa to clear the prior status violation. But if more
than 180 days, I don't think re-entering the US will help.
In your wife's case, if there is a violation, it would be more than 180 days
, and the re-admission to the US doesn't clear such history.
I would suggest you to talk to an experienced immigration lawyer about your
wife's case.
