Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday that some members of the
House Republican majority are “crazies” that are pushing Speaker John
Boehner not to accept a bipartisan immigration bill.
Reid said he is working hard to “maximize” the vote total of the Senate’s
immigration bill, which he expects to finish Thursday or Friday.
But the Democratic leader said the thought that a high vote total in the
Senate will force the House to act might not apply to this Congress. He
identified a water bill, Internet sales tax bill and a farm bill that the
Senate has passed with large majorities, only to stall in the House.

“The speaker has said within a period of a little over 24 hours, we’re
going to pass immigration but we’re going to have Democratic votes to do it
. As soon as his crazies heard that, I guess they talked to him and next day
he comes back and said: ‘I will only pass it if i have the majority of the
majority,” Reid said.
“The point is: I’m not sure he or anyone else in the Republican leadership
in the House really know what they’re doing,” Reid added.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who voted against Monday’s
procedural motion on the bill, took a much less dim view of the House than
Reid.

“I hope the House will be able to pass a companion measure and we’ll have
a conference and deal with an issue of this magnitude in a way that we
should. I look forward to seeing what the House can do and hopefully we’ll
be able to get to a product, a conference report, later in the year,”
McConnell said.
The Republican leader ignored a question on whether Boehner can pass an
immigration bill in the House.
Conservatives in the House have been pushing Boehner not to violate the “
Hastert rule,” which dictates that GOP leadership not bring a bill to the
floor without the majority of the House Republican Conference’s support.
The Senate’s immigration bill will likely require significant Democratic
support to pass the House.
Michael Steel, a spokesman for Boehner, said the House won’t simply take up
whatever the Senate passes.
“House Republicans support immigration reform, but will not simply rubber-
stamp a Senate-passed bill,” Steel told POLITICO. We’ll pass legislation
through regular order that reflects our priorities and the people we
represent – including effective border security and interior enforcement.”
