pace line。

Rock Hill RR 2014 re-cap #1: CAT5 AM
It was a windy and relatively (for April) chill day at SC. I was 30 minutes
late to the race site therefore did not get chance to seriously warm up and
did not get chance to talk with the team in detail for the strategy. One
thing that was very clear in my mind was: This is going to be an interesting
race with a lot of attacks, chases and counter attacks, even in CAT5: The
course is hilly, has many turns, has a lot of rough surfaces and is easy for
a breakaway to slip out of chasing group’s sight. All of these are heavily
in favor of a smaller breakaway group. If I can see it, others can too and
someone will pull the trigger. Due to short time, what I can tell my team
was to apply what we learned from the breakaway drill for attacking and
covering.
After Judy gave the order, we matched on. At mile 2, two guys attacked and I
followed their wheel. One guy pulled out soon and I hanged on with another
guy for another five minutes, took turns to pull and achieved maximum 25
seconds leading, then was caught soon after. A good warm up.
Encouraged by this, a few guys staged two to three attacks in next 10 miles
but all of these attacks were short-lived. My team were very determined to
cover any of these attacks and did not let any of them slipped away. At mile
12 another guy and me staged another attack but this one only lasted 3
minutes or so. After that, I tried to stay near the front but held off any
attack with the mind that the hills were coming.
The first serious hill was passed uneventful. However, I can feel that the
guys at front were increasing the pace to weed out the field. The second(and
the toughest) hill at 14 – 16 miles had seen at least two attacks and two
bridge effort. Knowing that this might be the decisive attack, I tried my
best to hang at a front guy’s wheel. This one mile hill is followed by a
false flat and another half mile gentler climb. Folks at the front were
vigorously rolling through all of them. After we went over the top, I looked
around and there were about 10 guys around. The motor-referee pulled up and
told us that we had 30 seconds of leading.
Immediately I noticed that the riders were sitting up, and looked a little
bit relaxed. I shouted “Folks! – We have 30 seconds good leading time. Do
you want them to catch up so that you compete the top 30 positions at the
end? Or would you rather work hard together for the guaranteed top 10
position?!” My question received enormous positive responses and someone
shouted “Pace line! Pace line!”. Then two experienced riders plus me
whipped others to form a rotating pace line – Boy that was a hard-to-manage
pace line: A lot of surging and yo-yo. Rider constantly fell out of line
then came back. A few times the line were totally shattered and we started
over to form it again. Nonetheless that was a pace line and we managed to
stay a good pace to keep the leading position. Interestingly there was one
guy who seemed strong but always hang at the back and never went in line and
never pulled. Pressed by a few of us, he went into the line but did it in a
strange way – every time when it was his turn, he surged like doing an
attack and created a big gap. When I reminded him to be steady, he said “I
know how to ride and what you need to do is to ride harder to follow or to
pass me”. – Okey! I got it. After this conversation, he slide back to the
end of the pack and never showed at the front again. Per my observation, he
was not struggling at all but just deliberately held back and waited for the
right moment.
We rode through the last 12 miles with a lot of rolling hills. The gap was
maximum 1.5 minutes and minimum 45 seconds. Even with the shortest gap, it’
s hard for the chasing group to see us due to the limited visibility in this
type of terrain therefore it was hard to keep them motivated, plus I knew
that my team at the chasing group was holding down the pace. What I needed
to watch out was another breakaway attack from the leading group. At mile 2.
5-to-end, a hill came up. I was at right hand near front. Two guys in front
of me was chatting and I thought they were conspire another breakaway hence
my attention was caught by them. Suddenly the guy who did not help launched
an attack from left and dragged two other riders out of this pack. After I
went over the guy in front of me to chase, they were already formed a pretty
good gap. I chased solely since no one else were following me but could not
catch them. Then I fell back at the remainder of the group to prevent from
being blow up. Darn! The wining chance was gone in just a few seconds!
I hang at another guy's wheel and saw the front three went away with about
20 seconds gap. Then we made the last right turn and entered the last 200
meters to finish. Right after the turn I saw Alvin Frias at the sidewalk
jumping up and down: “Sprint! Jerry Sprint!” – Sure!!! Though there’s no
podium finish I’d rather be ranked as 4th than 5th. I put the hammer down
and sprinted from right side(wind was from left) and outsprinted the front
guy.
The race was done. Several of our front pack guys went together shaking
hands, padding each other's back and some of them thanked me for motivating
them to stay in the game. I thought that was it. Then a couple of newly-made
friends came to tell me (while they were laughing for some obvious reason)
that things took a drastic turn: The guy who was so calculating to hold back
and staged the winning breakaway did not finish at top 3! – After the
final turn, he made another right turn and sprinted towards the old finish
line for yesterday’s criterium, without noticing that the RR’s finish line
was right in front 200 meters down! When he realized and turned back, the
larger leading pack were already through therefore he got the rank
corresponding to where he stayed most of the time – the end of the pack. Oh
I did not know how sorry he felt but it’s hard to image that he calculated
almost all his move correctly and put up a strong end game show, only to
fail in a relatively simple matter.
That’s how I ended up in a podium finish eventually. I felt happy for
predicting the race’s dynamic correctly for most of the time, had a clear
plan and followed through it most of the time. The finish was a lucky one.
Plus I had good result last year at there. So I guess Rock Hill is indeed my
lucky place.

最变态的Pro/1/2是96英里。

Jerry: What's going on guys?
Rider A: The peloton's coming. They have more than 100 ppl.
Rider B: They have R5, S5, carbon wheels..
Rider C: Last year some of the leaders emptied their tanks trying to keep
the lead and ended up DNF..
Jerry: Ok folks, I gotcha. You're right. Fight, you may end up DNF. Give up,
you may comfortably finish among the top 30's. But 5 hours from now, when
you're holding a cold bottle, sitting in your hot tub and looking into the
mirror, would you say to yourself: If there's a chance, just one chance, I
will come back and tell the pursuers, that they may take away our lead, but
they can never take away... our PACELINE!!
Riders chanted Jerry! Jerry! Jerry! then Paceline! Paceline! Paceline!
Jerry: Our Paceline!
Riders: Paceline!
Jerry: Let's get 'em boys...
