I will do the one-day STP ride on 7/9. So far the longest ride I had is 30
miles. I start to worry about the 204-mile ride. My main problem is that
while my legs are fresh and my heart rate is barely over 120, my butt starts
to scream. Any tips?
Also for those of you who rode one-day STP before, how is the support (food/
mechanic) on the second half of the ride?
My plan is to ride conversatively, going at around 17 mph and rest 15
minutes every 1.5 hours. With that I can finish under 14 hours. Sounds like
reasonable plan?

the second half is hillier. I thought it was just my perception, but I
confirmed by looking at the elevation profile. the support on the second
half is slightly worse. you want to fully refuel at centralia. the next few
stations are smaller, then Lexington is very good, you definitely don't want
to skip it. The next one is St Helens, my favorite.
If it's a hot day, you want to stop at every station and refill both water
bottles. the hardest part is around 150-170. it's hilly and it's usually the
hottest time of the day.
the first time I did in 12.5 hours but I was in a very good shape. I am
planning to do it in 15 or even 16 hours this time. there isn't really much
you can do about the butt other than standing on the pedals every now and
then and shake it out.
one tip I can share is that in the first half, try to draft as much as you
can, no matter how fresh your legs are, don't try to pull. I love tucking
behind tandems, they reduce the wind significantly. you'll have a lot less
riders around you to draft in the second half since most people do it in two
days, and the second half is not as flat anyway. another thing is don't try
to tag along a pace line that you don't belong to.
it's very similar to running a marathon, just less intensive but much longer
. mile 120-170 feel like mile 15-22 in a marathon, it turns from enjoyable
to a torture. then for the last 30 miles, your mental thoughness will get
you through

精神上支持一把。我没有骑过那么长距离,帮不上忙。我觉得桶桶的建议很好。

Good advice! Thanks. I am now pumped and am ready for the suffering. I think
it's likely going to be much worse than running a marathon for me. I'll see.
Are you also doing the one day ride?

Yeah, I am doing the one day ride too. I haven't done any long rides in 2
years
I don't think it's worse than running a Marathon. But then my memory of
riding STP is 2 years old and that of running a Marathon is 4 days. I wasn't
racing when I rode STP in one day but I was when I ran the Marathon. So it'
s probably not a fair comparison. Anyway, you will have a blast, I'm sure.

think
see.

Frankly, if your longest ride so far is 30 miles, prepare to DNF. Try hard,
push a little more, but don't hurt yourself.

DNF is unlikely, unless I get hurt pretty bad. I am not fast on bike, well I
am not very fast on legs either, but I do have the mental toughness to pull
it off. It might not be enjoyable, which is what I worried, but I have no
doubt I will finish it.

I have no doubt that you will finish as long as you keep hydrating and
eating and don't care about the time. There will be moments when you are
purely suffering. But hey, if you are not willing to suffer, why ride 200
miles in a day?

Thanks for your advice. I will definitely not ride hard in the first half. I
'd take it as summit day of a Rainier climb. Slow, steady, with a few very
short stops, and keeping myself hydrated and fueled.

mental toughness is based on your fitness level, your daily training, not
your imagination. You have to pay respect to training. With longest ride as
30 miles, I think you will have a DNF in this ride, before mile 100.

Then define fit. Please
A well trained runer will consider very fit, but I don't think they can ride
200 miles in one day with little training, but if you don't care about time
that's another story...
He is only worry about his butt, isn't this telling you that he does not
have much long ride experience?

no, he doesn't care about time, it's not a race, it's not even timed.

Thanks for all the advices you guys gave me. I started at 5:10 and finished
at 20:30, with a total time of 15 hours 20 mins. I went extremely
conservatively and stopped at near all rest stops to eat/drink. As a total
beginner to this sport, here is what I felt after the ride:
1. It's quite a bit easier than I expected if you don't take it as a race or
time trial. Even with a total training mileage of 180 miles for the YEAR (
one 55-mile ride, two 30-mile rides and a few 20-25 mile commuting rides),
and even with a moderate cold (sneezing all day long the day before the ride
), I finished without any problem and without feeling very tired. My legs
felt much better after the ride than after my marathon race last year. Note
that I had 1000+ mile of training mileage during the 4 months prior to the
marathon race.
2. It's a lot more dangerous than I expected. Twice I saw an ambulence
vehicle on the side of the road and a rider laying motionless on a stretch
and being helped. Once a lady in front of me slid to a ditch. I stopped to
help her to get her bike from the ditch. I also heard one ride being pinned
down by a car. I felt we riders were literally at the mercy of drivers.
That being said, I definitely will ride again. Next time, I will have a time
goal. If I can have a reasonable training, I will shoot for 12 hours.

it's safer if you ride in the fast pack :).
yes it's a totally different game if you have a time goal, just like running
. the first time I did it in one day I was semi time trying. I was well
trained and in good cycling shape that season. However I was having a cramp
fest after mile 150 and was very exhausted at the finish line. this time, my
YTD mileage is 360 including 206 on STP. However, I was very relaxed after
the ride. I was a little sore on Sunday and that was it. I was running at 8:
20 pace on Monday, 2 days after the ride.
