Sergei Rachmaninov had a bad case of writer's block. He had scored early suc
cess with his Prelude in C# Minor (Op. 3, No. 2) and had written a fair numb
er of similar piano miniatures as well as a piano concerto. The problem came
after his first venture into the larger form of symphonic writing. Symphony
No. 1 debuted in Moscow (1897) and was deemed a failure by critics and audi
ence alike. Like most creative people, Rachmaninov didn't handle rejection w
