Rival; Negotiations with Colombia on rail link; Bogota hopes to spur US on
free-trade pact (top article in front page).
(2) Robert Wright, Bogota Eyes 'Dry Canal' to Rival Panama Route; nws
analysis; Interoceanic rail line's success would rest on its ability to ship
goods quickly and cheaply (page 4).
My comment:
(a) A map and graphics accompany (2) in the print.
(i) The map show the 220km 'dry canal' would be near Colombia-Panama border,
on th eColombia side, connecting Cupica and Uraba, cities on Pacific and
Atlantic banks, respectively.
(ii) A bar chart headlined "Panama Canal usage total by country in FY 2010*
(long tons, m) * Financial year": US ~135; China~40; Chile ~25; Japan ~22;
South Korea ~20
(b) The analysis in (2) above states the 80km Panama Canal Railway opened in
1855, 59 years before the canal. (The map shows Panama Canal Railway runs
alongside the canal. |
