Medicaid is first on Quinn’s agenda of cuts. ......
Quinn’s budget address also announced the opening of an assault on state
pensions and health insurance programs for retired public sector workers ...
...
the Democrats and Republicans plan to shift the burden back onto the workers.
Two health insurance programs in particular were targeted: the Teachers
Retirement Insurance Program and the Community College Insurance Program. By
eliminating funding by $92 million, Quinn’s budget would cancel the entire
state contribution—one fifth of the total—and would force retired
educators to pay higher premiums.

WE ARE BEING BETRAYED AFTER TEACHING 35 YEARS LOSING OUR PENSIONS
I taught for 35 years, most of it in district # 230. I never earned a lot of
money, but I loved kids and teaching. I never made enough to invest in a
401k. But for those 35 years, I played by the rules, contributing 7 to 9% of
my salary to my retirement system, TRS. The state was also supposed to
contribute its share to the TRS system – it did not. Now TRS is selling up
to 10% of its investments, because you, the legislators, did not fund TRS
this year, nor did you allow the state to borrow to pay our pension checks.
I vote. My family votes. My friends and neighbors vote. Every retired
Illinois teacher is watching. If you do not fund our pensions, you will not
get our votes. If you do not support us, we will vote for your opponent. If
you do not fund our pension, you will never again get our vote. The cause of
this crisis is that the State did not make its proper pension contributions
over the last 60 years. Teachers made their proper contributions the state
did not. Do not cut back my pension or the pensions of teachers still
teaching! Teachers vote. Now it’s time for you to play by the rules.
Retired teachers are involved in every organization you depend upon for
support at election time. If you won’t support me, I will NOT support you
with my VOTE! I will talk with every member of my family and those in every
group to which I belong (church, civic, charitable) to tell them you have
gone back on your word and that they should not support YOU!
No Reduction in Current Member Benefits
Please do not cut our Health Insurance Benefits. We have paid into this for
many years. Do not punish us now as we are in our retirement years.
