I am truly excited to work with each of my student. Recently, my students
have been awarded top three prizes on Chicago area piano competition.
MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
I love music, I love playing piano, therefore I dedicate my career to teach
piano. With over 20-years performance experience, I have built myself as a
professional piano teacher and dedicated my career to piano education. As a
passionate pianist and piano educator, I work with students of all levels
and ages, they are from young children to adult students. As the Current
doctoral candidate of piano performance and piano pedagogy degree at
University of Illinois, I am confident to say that in my piano studio, I
provide the professional and reliable piano education. I will try my best to
develop your talents in the best way and help you to achieve your music
dream.
I believe the fine education will influence students' lifetime studying and
even affect their personality for whole life. Developing the solid music
learning foundation and leading student to become an independent learner in
their future studies are the main parts of my teaching philosophies. In my
piano lesson, students are inspired to enjoy their playing and encouraged to
pursue excellence in every area of their piano studies. With carefully
selected methods/repertoires, students will understand the core of their
study beyond the assignment. It is vital when students leave their lesson,
they have the ability to read music correctly, listen music analytically,
and approach the unfamiliar music on their own. Having the tool of self-
learning will benefit students in their future studies.
Whenever I meet my student at the first time, it is very important for me to
have the diagnostic test for them. To recognize the individual interests
and the goals will determine our teaching and studying plan. I believe every
student is unique. Not everyone wants to be a professional pianist, but
everyone wants to learn and benefit from his/her music study; not everyone
is looking for the future celebrities as the concert pianist, but as a
teacher, I regard each of my students as an individual star in my teaching
life. As soon as I recognize what his/her goal is, I create both short term
and long term teaching plans, these plans will be reflected in each lesson.
I persist in having the well-prepared teaching plan for each lesson and try
to cover all the necessary learning aspects periodically, which includes
fundamental piano technique training, musical development, historical and
theoretical introduction, sight-reading skill, ensemble music, ear-training,
etc. Besides, some students may also be interested in jazz music,
accompaniment skill, harmonization, etc. All the teaching content are based
on the curriculum tailored of each individual students.
Another my major teaching philosophies is to provide an effective way
guiding students through a journey of finding their best and achieving their
goals. Giving them the most fundamental keyboard training while considering
their own interest. The tools they learn from my lesson will enable them to
play piano easily. Students should enjoy the moment when they share the
music with their friends and families. It is necessary to let students feel
learning music are engaging, fulfilling, and fun.
I consider myself as a very sincere music educator. It is my responsibility
to teach my students not only to play piano, but also to assist them to
explore and enhance other life skills through their music study. Such skills
can be incorporated to all aspects of our lives:
Communication- such as when they play chamber music with partners;
Patience-practice obviously cost tremendous time and patience;
Confidence-great performance always needs great confident!
Problem solving/Decision-making --when student practice, they should be able
to think independently and to find a way solving the problem on their own;
Self-expressive -- students certainly expressive their feeling freely during
their performance
Time management- especially for adult students, what is the effective ways
of practice? Best managing your practice time! This is the skill can be
taught!
Judgment- Students need to establish their own interpretation in order to
become a judge for any performance they hear including their own playing.
Concentration- There is nothing better than good concentration to get the
most effective practice results!
Memorization- is one of the biggest challenges for many pianists
Through the time of learning piano, students will accomplish these goals
through the effective processes in every lesson.
"Teaching is learning". I am always open to listen to my students' thoughts
and discern their understanding. It is always important for me to adjust my
teaching methods and curriculum according to their learning pace; meanwhile
updating and improving my pedagogical concepts consistently. In order to be
a role model, I always challenge myself to re-think critically what I have
done with my students, and keep myself studying intensively as well.
Besides providing the traditional private piano lesson, students also have
opportunity to obtain all other intensive music training as well. I also
offer Group Piano lesson; Sight-reading; Music history, Music theory class;
Ear training; Four hands piano; Chamber music; Musicianship Instruction;
Improvisation; Music Reading Skill; Accompaniment training among others. In
addition, online lesson is also available for distant students. |
