A few mass media, including Xinhua News London Branch, have contacted me for
followup. In a more general sense, open discussions in the mass media (and
among readers in western countries and China) are more valuable than a
protest against Nature in this incident. Why? Because it is evident that all
the suspicions around Ye (in BBC, The Guardian, NYT, CNN, etc) are not
isolated incidents. It implies two negative stereotype associated with our
ethnic group: 1> we are weak, 2> we are cheaters. when a Chinese (not
limited to athlete) did great, many media's gut feeling is "this cannot be
true" (because "we are weak"); and a natural response is "this must be
suspicious" (because "we are cheaters"). Such a public image of Chinese has
too be reversed and refreshed, but I know it will take a long time, and many
's efforts.
If our protest (and actions taken by many others) can initiate some open
discussion with balanced views in major trade media, and even for the best
scenario can trigger some self-examination from the media (e.g. "why did we
be so harsh and suspicious about Ye? Did we do the right thing?"), it will
be invaluable in my opinion. I know it is merely a small step to set a
better (and a right) public image for Chinese, but at least we should try.
意义上希望能够对我们华人在西方社会的public image(甚至可以说stereotype)产生些
BBC,NYTime,The
