about 5,000 through training grants. Suppose each position lasts two to
three years, that'll be 500-750 individual fellowships a year (about 600 in
2007). Success rate has dropped from 40% in 2001 (highest in past decade) to
25% (lowest in past decade).
each year about 5,000 US citizens/GC receive PhD in bio-med. So ballpark,
about 10% can get an individual NRSA, and 3 times more can be covered by
training grants. although I'm not sure what percentage of that 5,000 become
postdocs.
foreign postdocs make up about 60% of the total postdoc population in bio-
med in US. but fellowships open to non-citizen/GC are far less. I'm
guessing that the percentage of non-citizen/GC that receive US degrees and
win fellowships in the US is 2% and declining (more foreign grad students
and less fellowships). |
