Ford claims its redesigned Mustang is the best-selling sports car in the
world during the first half of the year, according to IHS Automotive
registration data.
Notably, none of the right-hand drive variants -- the first in the nameplate
's history -- have arrived in customer hands just yet. Production of the RHD
model recently kicked off at Ford's Flat Rock assembly plant.
"Initial global response to the Mustang has been strong, and we are only in
second gear," said Ford global marketing and sales VP Stephen Odell. "We
continue accelerating production and global reach with right-hand-drive
models now coming out of the plant."
The RHD variant will allow the Mustang to reach more than 100 global markets
for the first time, including the UK, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand
and Japan.
Ford's pony car has been a hot seller at home as well, outpacing the
Chevrolet Camaro in August. Ford sold 86,769 Mustangs in the first eight
months of the year, while Chevy delivered 56,298 Camaros during the same
period. It is worth noting that Mustang sales are accelerating on wide
availability of the latest generation, while Camaro sales languish as the
market awaits the recently-unveiled 2016 model. |
