PALO ALTO, Calif. (KGO) -- An early morning crash in which a SUV collided
with a California Highway Patrol cruiser parked on the side of Highway 101
in Palo Alto has left a family injured and in mourning.
A 24-year-old woman was killed in the roll-over crash near the Embarcadero
Road exit. Relatives say her sister has also died, but the CHP says she is
still in critical condition. Four other family members were also injured.
The remnants of the family's shopping were strewn along the freeway, gift
with the tags still on them. Relatives tell ABC7 News that the family left
their home in San Bruno around 11:30 p.m. Thursday to go shopping in Gilroy.
They were buying gifts to take back to India for the upcoming wedding of
their 24-year-old daughter, who was killed in the crash.

At about 6:45 a.m., as the six family members were heading toward home on
Highway 101, their SUV clipped the back of a CHP cruiser parked on the
shoulder. The Lexus rolled, ejecting two sisters who were sitting in the
back. The officer had just stopped to help the driver of a pick-up truck who
was fixing a flat. A CHP spokesperson says the officer was parked several
feet off the freeway in the shoulder.
"He had on his emergency lights in the back, we call them 'ambers' to alert
traffic to move over to the left," Ofc. Amelia Jack said.
The father was driving the SUV with his wife in the passenger seat. Sitting
in the back were their 4 daughters, ages 12-24.
"The four parties that were still in the vehicle were, appeared to have been
restrained; it is still under investigation whether the parties that were
ejected, whether or not they were wearing seatbelts," Jack said.
Northbound lanes of Highway 101 were closed for hours while crews cleaned up
the wreck. Traffic was snarled for six hours.
The CHP officer was treated for minor injuries.
At this point there are no charges and the CHP says there is no indication
that drugs or alcohol were factors. | d*********e
