If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. A determined group of astronomers have taken
this schoolyard aphorism to heart. To circumvent the prohibitive cost involved
in constructing the colossal light buckets of yesteryear, researchers are now
implementing on a grand scale the newer — and much cheaper — light-
gathering scheme known as interferometry.
