Extensible Hypertext Markup Language is a hybrid
between HTML and XML specifically designed for

XHTML is a markup language written in XML;
therefore, it is an XML application.
XHTML uses three XML namespaces
(used to qualify element and attributes names by
associating them with namespaces identified by
URI references. Namespaces prevent identically
custom-named tags that may be used in different
XML documents from being read the same way),
which correspond to three HTML 4.0

It is perfectly valid and a fine practice to eliminate the end tags in LI elements in HTML. And there are lots of other tags that you can eliminate. HTML Tidy can rid those for you if you like.

for XHTML you are required to close every opened tagBut there's no good reason to be using XHTML in the first place. Stick with HTML 4.01 Strict and rid yourself of the shackles of unreasonable and unnecessary restrictions!

Well, I bet you haven't done any JavaScript programming on Safari and/or
Konqueror to see their CSS/DOM compatibility.
My web page is fully xhtml (and uses xhtml DTD, even validify against
xhtml strict DTD). The code generated by javascript is also xhtml (i.e.
the browser can properly read the generated the html in standard mode
xhtml strict mode no problem).
The problem with Safari is mutli-fold. It is based on Konqueror, which
only claims 90% compatibility with standard (check Konqueror web
