te），白修德是他的中文名。白氏晚年写有回忆录性质的历史著作，名曰《寻找历史》，
美国哈泼—罗出版公司1978年出品。这个故事就出自《寻找历史》。
白修德是犹太人裔，其父从俄国流亡到美国波士顿，他的穷愁的童年就是在那里度过的。
后来，他获得奖学金，进入哈佛大学读书。此间，他开始学习汉语，并跟随费正清研究中
国历史。1938年，白修德从哈佛毕业，已经差不多是一个“中国通”了。
这个青涩的“中国通”，渴望到战火中的中国历练一通，这样白修德就来到了中国，随后
