昨天在 Beestar 网上注册秋季的网上练习, 发现Beestar 增加了 vocabulary program
. 让儿子做了samples,
感觉还不错，他高高兴兴的把数学， 英文，词汇的每周训练题都注册了。我注意到 DK
的Children's Illustrated Dictionary (by John McIlwain)
列在参考书中. 我对此书印象很深, 这是一本为小孩词汇启蒙难得的好书. 我的两个小
孩前后从中都受益很大. 你若从不知道, 建议去书店看一看.
虽说它叫字典, 其实这本书更适合做知识词汇的学习书. 它收集了最基本的五千单词,
图文并茂, 例句,用法,发音,词形变化,相关词等都有指导.
大家或许都见过 First Dictionary, Picture Book, My First Word Book, First
Thesaurus 之类的书. DK 的Children's Illustrated Dictionary 是最好的.

2003年8月12日，到今天正好来美7周年。对我来说，5年感觉挺短，10年就觉得很长，
数字7么，不长不短的，写点东西好像正好。
7年如果看做一个可以移动的框，放在人生的初始，是从襁褓到走进小学，再往后挪挪
，是从小姑娘变成大姑娘，再后面就是从离家一天都想家的宅女到只身去北京上学。而
现在的这个框是在异国他乡度过的22岁到29岁这段人生最美丽的时光。

转这篇文章不仅仅因为作者的经历超级励志，也不仅仅因为她所获得的成就，毕竟成功
有多个标准，而励志的前提是理智。这儿有两个更重要的原因：作者七年的奋斗经历，
对那些希望改变自己处境的人提供了很多技术上的帮助，如果你想改变，但是你不知道
怎么做，如何做，也许在这篇文章中，你能得到一点启发。
当然，本文对于外出留学的同学，意义更大，作者多次提到自己是如何改变固
有的思维方式适应美国的环境，但不变的是坚韧追求自己的目标。这实际上正暗合了美
国这片国土上从来就有的单枪匹马的个人奋斗精神。美国的文化尊崇这种精神，养育这
种精神，也因为这种精神而强大。
最后，作者的经历还告诉了我一件我自以为早就知道的事儿：“你的勇气属于
你自己，只要你愿意，你完全可以只依靠自己，就能提供永不枯竭的勇气。”但我发现
我身边大多数人，包括我自己，都是假知道，而去这么做的很少。这位女留学生，却做
到了。

生就会看中文报纸了；而英文常用词汇高达上万，英国美国的初中生才会读报纸。所以
学中文比英文容易多了——当然这纯粹是出于鼓励，中英文各有难处。中文的常用单字
不如英语多——2010年版的《汉语大字典》收字六万多，收字最多的《中华字海》有八
万多字；而英语单词上百万。但汉字的字义更多，搭配组词更灵活多变；另一个更大的
汉语难点是各种各样没有严格规则的习惯用法，比清晰明确的英语语法飘忽多了。
刚刚看到一则新闻，说在1975-76年，国家出版局、科学院、新华社曾发起建国以来规
模最大的常用汉字统计，由北京新华印刷厂、人民日报印刷厂的排字工人，以及北京市
1500名中学生协同计算，从政治理论、新闻通讯、科技和文艺四类书籍86本、期刊104
本、文章7000余篇共2100余万字中进行频率统计，结果是：
现代印刷书刊一共只用了6335个字；
这六千多字中分五类，最常用的字有560个，常用字807个，次常用字1033个。这三类共
计2400个字，这些字占了书刊物汉字出现次数的99%。这就是说一个中国人，只要认识

背景介绍：事情缘起我现在在一所community college上的一门英语课。老师要求每个
工作日写一篇journal练笔，college rulled大小的本子，两页，大概1000个单词左右
。按老师的话，写journal主要是为了练笔，所以她不会看质量，只看重数量，只要你
写满两页，写够要求的篇数，就能拿到分，除此之外每篇journal需要有标题，日期，
以及编号。“You just write down whatever just comes to your mind, don't

because the explanation of gustar verbs and reflexive verbs are not clear.
So I started using Duolingo to learn basic vocabulary. It is a very good app
. You can learn simple sentences to pick up basic vocabulary by topic. You
will also see different verb tenses. For that part, you should learn how to
conjugate verbs for different tenses.

Well, I don't know how large your vocabulary is. But usually vocabulary is
not a big hurdle if you are not too bad at that. So just try to practice
more and try to take notes of the mistakes and make sure that you don't make
the same mistake twice. |

1. It doesn't matter how long have you been in the US. What matters most is
how you practice your English language and/or communication skills through
whatever means on a daily basis.
2. language≠communication:
English language is English itself. It's something like vocabulary,
pronunciation and grammar. They are easier to improve in short term. Think
about how long it took you to prepare for GMAT, GRE or TOEFL and scored
really high (< 1 year).

昨天在这里看了大家的讨论把精神传达给赖赖他爸爸，后者立刻受了刺激。晚上把很罕
见的陪儿子读书，批评儿子读的太快含混模糊，很多词跳过，很多词读音不对，很多词
不理解，批评我满足于他会念就可以全然不顾念的对不对，懂不懂，只管大量借书。
我觉得他的顾虑当然不是完全没道理，但是如果象他那样要求每天顶多一本书，而且他
还要求一本书读３天读到熟。那阅读量就完全没法上去了。大家是怎么处理这个精读和
泛读的关系呢？

儿子上K, 学校没有作业, 真是一点没有. 我觉得呢, 英文嘛,偶就放给学校了, 偶最多

结果麻烦就来了, 老师打电话反映, 儿子在学校写journal的时间光顾着画画, 理论上
应该写One page journal, 儿子大概就起个头, 最多两行. 老师都打电话到家里来了,
我能不急吗, 先教育儿子,以后先写journal, journal 写完了有时间再画画. 儿子诚恳
地点点头. 上学去了.
下午, 儿子还没回家, 老师的email就到了, 只有一行字:He tole me had to write
first but when I went to his journal he was drawing.

It would be a good idea to to read some fundamentals first so that all the
parties can share the vocabulary. A discussion cannot continue unless all
parties agree on some fundamentals.
Frankly speaking, I just started reading these because of CFA, and I think it
is a very interesting topic, some common vocabulary:
demand, supply, arregate, short-run, long-run, anticipated, unanticipated,
inflation, interest rate, employment, monetary policy, fiscal policy, |
