发帖数: 118 | 3 stats PhD哪个方向对coding要求都不低, 这是基本技能。生统PhD一样要做大量的
simulation。倒是硕士coding强度要小很多，因为不用做Thesis.
coding其实很容易的，就是个搭积木手熟的过程，比学数学容易多了。就是比较繁杂和
耗时间。
进industry的话，SAS或者R，至少要有一样能拿得出手。 |

，有名气。现在老板让我自己选择thesis 的题目，我考虑有如下选择：
从统计方法上来分：survival; personalized medicine; machine learning (in
biostatistics); bayesian; longitudinal; nonparametric; missing data
从应用上来分： cancer; imaging; environment; clinical trial
我胸无大志，准备毕业后在银行药厂或者it届找一份工作。我自己可能考虑不全面，也
对业界了解少，所以想请大家帮忙参谋一下，说点意见（论点加点论据更佳）。谢谢了

发帖数: 1180 | 5 我觉得，一个博士的thesis和以后做什么工作关系不是非常大，我博士弄的是bayes，
后来干的东西和这毫不相关，而且，我找工作的时候，投一些和bayes有关的工作，有
些人家电面都不给。主要还是看你在哪方面已经胸有成竹，或是特别感兴趣，这样做起
来顺手，有干劲，能早点毕业。但是如果你想到it业工作，建议现在把编程能力搞上去
，顺便machine learning 提高提高。如果想去药厂，当然就survival, longitudinal,
clinical trial那几块了。现在，还有一个问题是，我觉得，biostat, bioinfo，有点
成了坑的感觉，好些biostat， bioinfo的人告诉我，他们投一些生物制药以外的工作
，如it,投不中，主要好些hr看到bio那个词，就觉得他们不适合那工作，不给面试。我
以前认识一学bioinfo phd的人，在校顺手拿了cs master，毕业后纯靠cs master找工
作，当了software engineer. 所以你自己想想。还有，就是把英语听说好好提高一下

本人现在是master在读，正在寻找2011的暑期intern，顺便去了一下iso了解申请CPT的
流程。结果，对方告知，除非我的program要求必须intern才能毕业，否则不能申请。
她又说我的program无此要求。我问有什么补救方法，她说可以在summer register一个
MS thesis,然后claim完成thesis必须要intern.
但是，我们program在我入学时有两个option,写thesis毕业和take一个comprehensive
毕业。但是现在不知什么原因取消了前者，所以我没办法选thesis.和系主任谈了这个
事情之后他建议我暑假选independent study并claim完成thesis必须要intern.
保险起见，我和iso double check了一下independent study是否可使我eligible for
CPT.答案是no.
这种情况，我还有什么办法可以申请CPT？我不知道我们这种规定是不是普遍现象？大
家都是暑假注册了thesis才能申请CPT才能出去实习的吗？

这么说，他好像是在问我现在做这个research，想make 什么point?这里的thesis不是
指的论文,应该类似于what's your point?

做了块一年，结果发现之前设计的有问题，一切又要重新来过。某天我老板跟我说，不
把这个project做完无法毕业。跟老板谈完的那个周末我超级郁闷，反复想了2天，最终
在周一的时候毅然冲到老板办公室，直接摊牌……我跟老板说，每天一到实验室一想到
又要做那个project我就抑郁，这玩艺死活不work，已经快要把我对学术那点点热情彻
底耗光了。现在有两条路你可以选，一是给我一个新的project，我把新的project作出
来后毕业；二是我现在就拿个master走人。估计我老板被我的决绝吓到了，然后没啥废
话的，我拿到了新project。后来实践证实这个决定相当的英明~
之后我算是踏实安稳了一阵子，毕竟不能无限制的挑战我老板的底线……不过呢，虽说
不能明目张胆的挑衅，没人说不可以暗地里偷着跑~于是在2月冬天的某个周末，我跑到
了Quebec City的冰雪节，在天寒地冻的冰雪世界里好好转了转这个冬日的童话之城~
此后一直相当的安于小村生活，除了早晚拍点儿村子周围的景儿，似乎哪都没去。这期

As to the intention, I'm not saying they were wrong because of the intention

我现在是A专业的PhD, 同时想拿个B专业的master，所以在跟B专业的一个教授做一个
master thesis。我大概明年暑假或者秋天拿到A专业的PhD（自己老板给我定的目标）
，我想在PhD毕业前或毕业时写完B专业的thesis，拿到master。
我今年9月才刚开始跟B专业的那个教授搞研究。他学术水平很高，一开始就给我很明确
的定好了课题，恰是他最擅长的领域，我每次跟他meeting都很有收获。而且那是个很
不错的题目，他说如果做出来了会远远超过一个master thesis。
我老板正好今年9月开始sabbatical一年，期间他出国了，一直没怎么管我，我也没花
太多时间在自己的课题上，导致进展很慢。
他快回来了，到时候我是否该把跟B专业教授做master thesis的事情告诉他呢？我感觉
不应该说，不然他肯定会觉得我分心太多，会阻止我。但同时我也担心他万一知道了会
更生气。我准备那这个B专业的master已经2年了，期间上了很多课，花了不少精力，也

发帖数: 578 | 31 拿了offer本来还挺高兴的，现在弄到OPT 麻烦又出来了。大家帮个忙出出主意，主要是今年5月毕业会有问题。
我学校情况是这样的，master 毕业可以有两种选择：
一个是6个学分(2 project courses)的 project,一个是12个学分(4 thesis course)的
thesis。我其他的课都修完了，准备选第一个6学分的project
我原本打算这学期估计找不到工作，所以就选了3个project的学分 准备夏天再选3个学分project就可以毕业。可是现在手头有offer了，公司都想让5月份左右工作，我现在5月还少一门3学分的project的课毕不了业。自己想了下面几个方法，大家看看哪个可行：
1. 把project换成thesis,然后申请5月份开始的pre-opt （因为project不能申请opt
所以换成thesis）。这种方法算不太好的下策了，写个thesis估计我上班的时候都不会
太舒服，还得想这事情。现在一点儿还没写
2. 暑假毕业，暑假期间先申请full time CPT，同时在学校注册另外3个学分的project，暑假CPT期间同时申请OPT |

发帖数: 264 | 32 面了3家，每次面的都和准备的有很大出入（和版上面经有些差别），写出来希望对大
家有帮助，不要像我一样面得时候被问得措手不及。具体题目不说了，一个是签了协议
，另一个是其他人很难被问到一样的题，没啥参考价值。
G-research：
经历：1 talk + 7轮 1:1 + lunch interview + group diner。面之前没有看到
research面经，就按照普通SDE准备了（其实也没准备多少），只是另外做了slides。
结果最后面得完全不是那么回事…几乎所有的题目都是围绕着我的thesis和相关的
research。大概有2-3道比较接近版上面经题目类型的不难的问题，分析写code。
经验：要是面research的同学，一定多多准备自己research相关的东西。另外我感觉是
research招人看重背景（学校和研究方向），我是国内土博，他们想做我thesis相关的
内容才让我去面试，结果发现不是他们想要的。看到组里一个个都是大牛校的Phd，我
被拒得心服口服。当然我面得也不咋地。不过不同组的面试风格可能也不一样，换句话
说…面research好像真没法准备。

发帖数: 122 | 33 更新一下，今天的心情就像过山车，昨天给ISS发了USCIS的文件，跟他们说我eligible
，一早上收到ISS邮件说不给办理，学校明文规定必须一年之内答辩，不然不给extend
i-20。我又回复重申uscis在2013年的policy memorandum并且告诉很多学校已经update
学校policy和USCIS一致。焦急等待iss回复的同时，又找了advisor帮我打电话给iss
（他在出差，答应明天再打），同时又在iss网站上看到有一个工作人员是中国人，加
了她fb要了email地址，再次给她发邮件重申policy（我都想直接邮件给director了）
到底是中国人互相帮忙，她立马回复我，然后说他们会跟director开会商议再回复我。
焦急滴等待几个小时后，iss终于给我回复说会给我办理，并且发了uscis的条款。贴上
来分享一下：

thesis project会不会work、什么时候work。而且你thesis学的那点技术还未必有多大
用。
抓紧时间毕业找工作是王道。 |

(yes, you heard it from the author). I did read though a super big bull's
original Ph.D. thesis from his Ph.D. thesis adviser collection (I actually
have no respect for him because he is a horrible person), but his thesis is
amazing with original films in them neatly cut to fit the binding etc. Can
you imagine doing that without a computer in the early 80s? |

先简单介绍一下我的背景：
国内屌丝学校转学到普渡，12月份刚毕业，方向是结构，决定本校读研，下个月就开始
。没有实习经验。今年暑假开始跟一个教授做research一直到现在，没做出什么东西来
。。教授下个学期也没RA position给我，他只让我继续做我现在在做的东西，可能就
hourly pay吧。TA也没能帮我搞到（这个我是真的恼火，GPA3.9，有做过动力学的
grader, 有教授推荐，还是搞不到TA，问committee的负责人，总是跟我说没有我想象
的那么简单，从来不正面解释）。
现在最迷茫的到底要拿一个non-thesis的master走人还是继续做research。我本科已经
修掉两门研究生的课，只要8门课就能毕业了，如果是non-thesis的，4加4一年毕业。
给活干的那个教授是明确让我下学期继续帮他干活，如果继续干活，那就只能修三门课
，如果那样的话我就会干脆做thesis然后一年半毕业。但是我并没有得到任何

搞应用的，搞政策也是很佩服的，因为他们都知道理论的缺陷以及和现实的差距。如果

在过去半年多的时间里，引起海内外广泛关注的中国学界最大的新闻之一，就是贵院
2002年毕业生刘菊花硕士学位论文涉嫌抄袭事件。
据不完全统计，包括中央电视台、中央人民广播电台、新华社在内的多家权威媒体报道
了该事件，网络媒体对此事件的转载和传播更是不计其数。不仅如此，《中国日报》对
该事件的英文报道还将这一丑闻传遍了全世界。因此，依法对刘菊花硕士论文涉嫌抄袭
案加以查处，不仅事关刘菊花本人，而且关系到贵院、中国研究生与学位教育质量、人
文社会科学界乃至整个中国学术界在海内外的学术信誉。然而，半年多时间过去了，刘
菊花硕士论文抄袭事件迄今仍未见到处理结论。因此，我们决定给贵院及主要负责同志
写这封公开信，以表达我们对这一事件的严重关注。
