新加坡市中心的天福宫庙门外，此时已挂上了大红灯笼和春联，使这座有170多年历史
的寺庙比平日更添了几分明艳。这座寺庙正在准备迎接一年中最繁忙的时间：接下来的
几周内，成千上万名善男信女将在这里上香许愿，迎来一个吉祥的中国年。在这样的日
子里，即使如我一样、远谈不上虔诚的人们，也会尽量维系这条代代传承的传统纽带。
在如此典型的中华文化环境中，对自己的传统提出质疑似乎显得格格不入，但今天，新
加坡就意味着对“华人身份”这个传统观念的挑战。随着中国在世界舞台上的崛起，她
在对外输出一套关于中国文化和中华民族的概念，这种概念在海外华人社会中产生了新
的张力。从前，新加坡华裔曾经被称为“中国人”或“华人”，而这两个词之间存在着
细微的区别：前者是指具有中国国籍或在中国出生的人，后者则泛指任何在种族和文化
上属于中华文明的炎黄子孙，这种细微的区别被认为是人为添加的。但正是这种微妙的
区分，现在已经成为了新加坡华人身份问题的关键所在。
从种族上区分，新加坡有四分之三的人口是华人，他们多数是19世纪上半叶从中国福建
