Spade openiing lead is ok since you will keep Dia A and
club K as entry to ruff two dias. (duck the first spade,
win whateven return, you can ruff the third spade immediately)
The problem is club openning lead.

From the view of the declarer, 3D is safe unless there are *THREE*
heart losers (a heart ruff) or two heart losers plus a spade ruff.
Spade ruff is unlikely since East may open 3S instead of 2S if he
had serven cards of spades. If A and Q of hearts is behind the dummy
and East had only 1 or 2 cardsof hearts, Heart ruff is unavoidable.
It is important that East CANNOT have both A and Q of hearts. So HJ
will ALWAYS lose to West's HQ or HA. But HK may hold that trick. If so,

This is a good plan.
At table, I wonder what the spade 9 mean. I could see pd had the Q of spade,
and it unlikely that I could get a club ruff. Thus I continue with a small
spade
at trick two, maybe pd has 4 trumps??
Actually, if that is the case, declarer may well get home with cross-ruff.
even now, I don't have much reasoning here. His hand was:

East 80%. Worst bid, 1S. Holding a 4 loser hand, this is certainly
double-then-spade bid. After 1S, it's hard for both sides to catch up.
I will say that double-then-spade is more distributional, and
spade-then-double is more point count oriented.

It's a guess work, according to Total Law -->
1. Your side: 5+ spade + 3-spade = 8+
other side: looks like a 9+ fit
total tricks = 18, 19(most likely), 20
2. Since it is guess work, I start with 19. If you make 5S, means you get 11
tricks. Then you can beat the other side 3. Even if you down -1, otherside
will down 2.
Next, if total is 20. If you make 5S, other side -2.
At that high level, with 3-spade, and diamond AKQ; I'd prefer the chance of
double.

if East choose to throw spade, you only ruff 3 round of spade, cash dia K,

Depends on the bidding. Had declarer shown no significant spade length, then

Let's say in a "normal" situation, since dummy has 2 and you have 3 spades, if

I don't think your thinking of his being singleton/void
necessarily has to do with his double---
You have 4 Jxxx and RHO has showed at least good 5.
Your partner doesn't have to bid anything for him to
more likely have 1- spades than have 2+ spades.
His (happening to have) spade stopper is not necessarily
good enough reason for the double to be bad---
Switch his SA with C9, that will make 2N out of question

case? (Note h

I assume east would have played Q from KQ, thus west has
the spade Q. The best line to gaurantee the contract is
win spade ace, cash heart ace, then lead a LOW club from
hand to keep the entry smooth in case club 4-0.
if east win club and return spade, you play low to block

Bid, but the question is what kind of gadgets you play over 1NT?
usually, bid over WEAK 1NT need to promise constructive value,
and this hand does have it.
The weakness is short spades, i.e.

There is just no answer for this one. At the table, I bid 3S,

partner cuebids 4D with SAxx HKJ9xx Dx CJxxx and I signed off at 4S,
S 3-3, but K offside, so I shouldn't make it, but my LHO didn't expect
such a weak spade suit and drew the 3rd spade herself. Thus I made

There are several choices here actually.

I don't think your argument is convincing either.
first, line 1, because east discard a spade, he's likely to have 5+ spades,
the chance of west has 4 diamonds is likely 50-50.
second, I can't see line 2 is better, because after you lost club to Q,
east won't return a spade if the finesse is on. if he has the last diamond,
you going down for sure, or he could just return a
club. Now the best you could do is ruffing a diamond in hand and hope for
miracle.

But yes it is possible to hold T732, Qx, xx, K9762. But then you may be able

This hand is interesting:
(1) Playing low C from dummy caters for club 5-0
(2) Playing Q first caters for club 1-4 (east holding K9xx) AND spades 3-5 (

Both scenarios are unlikely, but I think (2) is more unlikely in probability

If east has 3 or more hearts, we are safe. If east has only 1 heart, we are
also safe, since poor west has no D to play after winning 3rd spade.
If east holds 2-2-5-4, he will throw 2nd heart on spade. After west is in

hearts, that would be an easy make :)

Seriously, it is a toss-up. D10 lead is safe, but passive, you may lose a
tempo. Spade lead may cost, but if partner has as little as SJ, it can be
effective. In this hand, partner has KQ in diamonds but nothing in spades.
It doesn't have to be that way. The real question is whether you should

Tempo can be important though. Declarer has long spade suit which can offer

for club lead blowing a trick is not very high, since declarer cannot have

If partner has C8, you can be a hero by underleading the clubs then get a
spade ruff. But you will look really stupid if dummy has stiff C8,
especially if partner has a natural trick in spades or hearts.
Since the suits don't split well for the opponents, there is a reasonable
hope that they may not come to 12 tricks anyway. You may even get a diamond
trick :-)
I will lead C9. In case partner is void in clubs, he will figure out that I

Let's suppose West does start with 6313 shape. After West cashes TWO spades,

To set up 4 spade tricks, the best chance is to concede a trick first to

but it seems the only way to make if LHO has 2 spades and 3 trumps.

If you have TPTK, he plays like he has a draw(2 spade with one pair, mostly like king of spade), TPTK(ak) may allin him.

Digging
Seamus Heaney
Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests; as snug as a gun.
Under my window a clean rasping sound
When the spade sinks into gravelly ground:
My father, digging. I look down
Till his straining rump among the flowerbeds
Bends low, comes up twenty years away
Stooping in rhythm through potato drills
Where he was digging.
The coarse boot nestled on the lug, the shaft
Against the inside knee wa...

enum {jack, diomand, heart, spade};
int suit = spade;
cout << suit;
