WV在东部 NO1漂流之州, 出事的后面有没有地质的原因, 我带着这个疑问查看了一些资
料(我拥有完整的漂流图书馆, 连老美估计也没几个如此).
appalachian whitewater这本书阐明了WV是北美漂流最危险的州: 几乎每条河都有undercut
feather(由于 sandstone被侵蚀),而undercut rock是这次MM事故的第一杀手, 在WV漂
流的十几条名河中, 只有NEW R的一段没有undercut的警告.
不说是undercut 一定导致死亡, 但出事概率要大得多, 有经验的也许安全不少, 跟商
业漂流的同学如果掉下去, 死亡概率是几百分之一到几千分之一. 对照一下MAINE, 它
那里的河(包括NEWENGLAND绝大部分)没有这个undercut feather, 因此可能要安全几十
倍甚至百倍.
所以出事是必然, 出在谁身上是偶然.
建议少去WV为妙, 前几天我还打算带漂流队每3年去那里漂一回, 如今一辈子去一到俩
趟足矣. |

landing location.
As for the broken handhold, the climbing day was warm & sunny, in perfect
condition, but the previous day was raining hard. The sandstone in Red Rocks
needs at least 24 hours to dry out back to good condition. I fear that this
had something to do with the accident. The rock quality in Red Rocks is not that
good. Many times when lowering down or rappelling, foot stepping on rock easily

附近的国家公园扫光。Pinnacles National Monument约80英里开外，把它列到了去年
的计划中。谁知阴差阳错，远隔千里的公园逛了不少，近在咫尺的却被耽搁下来。上个
周末，终于把它攻克了。
说是攻克，还真颇为周折。一行二、三十人，开着7辆车从硅谷南行。中午时分，在离
公园入口几十米的地方被拦了下来。告知园内的停车位已满，只有出来一辆才能进去一
辆。
人多嘴杂，一时乱作一团。英雄就是在“战火”纷飞的时候产生的。坐在俺车里的
Richard提出将车停在公园外的露营处，再坐公园缆车进来。正当大家纷纷置疑，他搭
车去露营地考察加谈判去了。最后每辆车停车费5刀，同时公园门票的5刀又被免掉，最
终持平。一番周折，在公园门口耽搁了一个多小时后，终于进了园子。
Pinnacles National Monument最大特色在于小石峰（pinnacles）状的火山石。暗红的
石头在山巅上或是翘首独望，或是两两相依，而鳞次栉比的则像是浓缩了的武凌源。远

今天的重头戏是Antelope Canyon，另外就是在Glen Canyon National Recreation
Area转转，看看Lake Powell和大坝。然后赶回Las Vegas。
Antelope Canyon是流水冲刷岩石（Navajo sandstone）形成的狭缝。下雨的时候，方
圆十几英里的雨水都会汇聚到这里，流经岩石中的狭缝，最后流入Lake Powell。加上
风的侵蚀作用，久而久之形成了现在的Antelope Canyon。当光线投进狭缝，会产生令
人着迷的神奇效果。据说Antelope Canyon是1931年一个Navajo牧羊女发现的。由于这
里以前有很多羚羊出没，因而得名。Canyon在UT-98 South上，距离Page大约7 mile远
，分为Upper Antelope Canyon（the Crack）和Lower Antelope Canyon（the

马耳他是前英殖民地，车是右驾左行的。
今明两晚旅馆在马耳他岛西北角Ramia Bay的Riviera Resort。按米国人的标准，就是个很次的度假村。
GarminGPS欧洲地图不带马耳他。马耳他岛长30公里，宽10公里，我们绕了很多路，进了好几个小村庄，花了近两小时才到旅馆。中间错打错着到了Golden Bay，落日下金黄色的沙滩很漂亮。

马耳他共和国由三个岛组成，Malta, Gozo 和Comino。
从马耳他岛到戈佐岛的轮渡大概每45分钟一趟。岛上交通不是太方便，建议自驾。
第一站是蓝窗。
蓝窗出来后看到路上有个Village Craft Center，好些作坊，金属饰品，玻璃工艺品，真丝lace等等, 很不错。LD居然花了XX欧买了件手织真丝披肩(有马耳他证书的说，呵呵)。
第二站是Ta’ Pinu教堂。这个教堂似乎很有地位，近两任教皇到来过这里布道。
途中经过的Zebbug，很典型的米黄色马耳他小镇， sandstone的低矮楼房，有个大教堂在镇中央。
第三站是北岸的盐田。
