While the wealthy media and the wealthy pols argue over whether "rich"
starts at $400K or $1M, a family with a $50K annual income will see an extra
thousand dollars in taxes in January 1.
That's when the Obama-era cut to the FICA payroll tax expires. Just

On 12/31/12, the temporary tax reduction to the employee's social security
payroll tax officially expired. The reduction was originally created for
the year 2011 only, but was extended for the year 2012.
Beginning on the 1/1/13 paydate, the social security tax deducted from your
paycheck will revert back to the 6.2% (up from 4.2%).
