毕竟19世纪20世纪初期的不少书写作手法老套和现在的生活脱节也是比较大
如果读译文的话,很大程度上就受限于译者的笔触了
读英文的, 那么那些老掉牙的英文还真读的有够累的
20世纪30年代之后到现在的, 基本上可以跟着 pulitzer prize + man booker prize 走
20世纪末的时候, 英美都有所谓 top 100 的list, 很多也可以作为选书的参考
time magazine 也有一个list
我喜欢的几本书都是大俗书

Lately I have also been interested in French mideval architecture. I am
reading two books from library on this topic:
Notre Dame in Paris -- the biography of a cathedral by Allan Temko (1955)
and
Cathedrals and castles -- building in the middle ages by Alain Erlande-
Brandenberg (1995)
The first book was written by a Pulitzer winning critic of architecture. It's
about both the architecture and also French history. The book feels old only
in it |

writing. I always check pulitzer winner list and find some good ones in
library. those writings are relatively modern and closer to our daily life.
if I like them, I may buy them later when on sale:)
if just for killing time, detective novels are good and easy enough. |

读书是一辈子的一事,可TIMING很重要,年轻时读的书总是对人影响最大,那时可以不加
思索地接受.
科幻我也喜欢,上学时还试着写过,现在有年头不看了.
来美国后图书馆如此方便,对着成架子的书却不知如何选择,后来发现PULITZER奖是个不
错的GUIDE,按图索骥地找,也看了不少好书.
经常做的一个白日梦就是,等我有钱了,就开家书店,只卖好书,不担心赔钱.此生只能是
梦了,呵呵. |

with good quality. At least they didn't disappoint me yet(many of them are
not novels though).
Or search best XXX of recent years under topics you're interested. Once I
found a best travel writing of 200? in library. It includes many short
stories written by many authors. More than half of those stories are a lot
fun to read and easy to understand. |

An Eternal Golden Braid that also discussed paradoxes and Godel theorem.
I ordered the book from Amazon.com a couple of years ago, it was out of
print then, back now the reprint came out shortly after.

有一些很滑稽幽默的镜头,但多数时间都是淡淡的.坐在hotel巨大的玻璃窗前,
东京的密密麻麻的高楼大厦,无数的灯火,来来往往的车流,即使在生活中不觉
得迷失的人,此时此刻也会有种lost的感觉.整个电影非常细腻.
今天才发现,原来导演Sofia Coppola就是当年导Virgin Suicide的人.Virgin
Suicide我几年前无意间在一家电影院看过,觉得情节有些难以理解.今年看
Virgin Suicide作者的新小说--middlesex (得了2003 pulitzer prize),
就不觉得virgin suicide很奇怪了.
我觉得女生可能更会喜欢Lost in Translation.里面很多感觉是非常subtle的. |

book I read a month ago" the power from the east (can't remember the name
correctly, the author also wrote a book on china and won the national book
prize"Pulitzer" or "national book award', if my memory serves me right). the
book referred to china as a great nation deeply HUMILIATED in the past
hundreds of years and counted the nationalism in China as a factor that might
cause unstability of Asia.
