hhehe, i've never met him before so i am not sure how he would regard himself
-)
I just explain why i think he could be called polisci-ist. North and Olson
are different. Their impacts in polisci largely come from polisci-ists'
application of their works. Their contributions to polisci are more like those
of Williamson (for his organizational economics), Hotelling (for his spatial
model) or Samuelson (for his internatoinal political economy). All these guys
are not directly involved in polisci,

李1982年上的rebellion-revolutn modrn china和Chinese Forign Policy的确很可能
和O8一起上,因为O8 majored in PoliSci, and concentrated in "International
Relations," 。尤其Chinese Forign Policy本来就是PoliSci的课。而且O8 81年到83

看来肘子挖坑不知细,打假的技术含量也不高啊,只要会英文会Google就够了,他的

Well, we are all social scientists so nothing prevents an economist from
publshing in polisci journals, or a political scientist publshing in econ
journals (although the latter occurs much more rarely). But I'm sure Shelling
would regard himself as primarily an economist. Doug North also has articles
in political science journals, but does anyone regard him as a political
scientist? His influence in polisci is at least as great as that in econ. Or
take Mancur Olson. He's probably more influentia

Assuming you are in China, I would think that the interview is a chance that
the professor(s) want to see your command of spoken English because most
Polisci Ph.D. students need to teach in their third or forth year.
Moreover, I think you should prepare answering questions regarding your
training, because they would like to determine whether you can survive in your
Ph.D. study. I am not sure how Polisci is taught in China, but here
quantitative skills, i.e., math and statistics training, is quit

Polisci is an occupation and ideal rather than just an ivory tower. Studying
it makes us feel good, and also working in a prestigious Univ improve our
self respect. And there is a better chance to get better resources.

原来我贴过 PS 上的一篇文章,关于 job placement 的统计,几十年的数据,大概是
说 8 大之间相互给对方 placement,其他学校干瞪眼,除了少数的几所譬如 CalTech
,Rochester,UCSD 等有一技之长的。

呵呵, why not placement and polisci?
Polisci is an occupation and ideal rather than just an ivory tower. Studying
it makes us feel good, and also working in a prestigious Univ improve our
self respect. And there is a better chance to get better resources.
Why not~

第一点就不成立。他说世界结构就是 Anarchy, 无政府,各国象桌上的每个台球,互相
没什么影响/控制。(这个录像可能是2006年前的老东西了)。
这就是胡扯,不是么。根本上,国与国之间的共同利益,和利益的冲突,都会产生某种
程度的互相影响/控制。
他自己到后面也说了,米国 不喜欢联大的布托斯加利,他就得 走人,换阿南上。或者
不用他说,米国不喜欢你智利的总统,你看看你们换不换一个,不换就干掉你。
你如果说联合国不是国家,那么好,从国家方面看,你中国如果把印度河上游切了,
或者米国封锁了马六甲,你看看有没有影响。或者你俄罗斯把乌克兰的天然气切了,你
看对对方决策有没有影响。没有吗?
他这个假设不成立的关键,在于它无法否认这样一个事实:即便一国对其它国 不能有
百分之百的控制/影响,也可能达到很高的控制/影响。结构上根本就不是完全无政府,
而是有等级有远近的多面聚合体。

你的目标是paper得个好分,不是真的把世界说的一清二白。所以怎么去揣测你老师的
喜好才是正理。反正我还不认识一个polisci的老师用 dielectical materialism的方
式分析美国两党政治的。所以建议你不那么写。第一他们看不懂。第二他们肯定觉着你
这是党给洗脑出来的世界观,肯定不对。

我之前用马克思主义分析美国政治, 得分就不好.....虽然prof还说很创新什么的....
我们老师要我们的paper反应出看了课堂要求的阅读....
看来我要去好好看阅读了....下半学期的都是跳着看的...

我翻过一些如《guns, germs and steel》等描述人类早期的书,发现在人类早期理科
确实没啥用:走出非洲不需要用gps导航,饿了路上捡些野果子吃的不需要用"heat-
seeking" missile来射杀野猪。我的书架上有一本《self-sufficient life and how
to live it》指导如何过自给自足的生活,我本科毕业后就准备去法国南部过两年那样
的没有电脑自己耕种生活。
而人类群体作为social animals,在最早期就卷入了大量文科知识,对部落群体的管理
:elders如何discipline年轻偷吃粮食的族员,如何在围剿狼群之前提高战士们的
morale。。。这些都是直接关系到族群生存的课题。在这个primitive阶段,文科知识
远比理科重要。
后来文明大厦越建越高,城邦的兴起、政府机构的复杂、交通工具的日益发展...文科
和理科的作用都很大,很多时候交汇在一起,越来越不好衡量哪个更重要哪个更次要~~
a. 说理科只是民工的文科朋友,你们可否知道如今很多文科领域的quantitative方法

You can transfer to new school and get a JD/PhD in 6 years. Some school
gives you flexibility to do that. Then, your path is wide open -- you can
be a law professor, a PoliSci professor, an analyst, a lawyer, . . . just to
name a few. If you don't like law school after you are in, then drop it.
If you are no longer interested in politics/theories, thenn drop the PhD.

I will take one year leave to study Economics this fall and get a MA degree.
My current supervisor is a joint professor of polisci, econ and business, so I
will work with him at Econ department to study game theory and rational choice
approach. But the problem is he knows little about IR and institutionalism. I
also work with another professor who is very good at institutionalism but the
problem is that she knows little about IR and is not a formal theorist. Then I

It is very simple...Just write an application to the Department and then get
the funding to have an extra year study on economics, or econometrics, or
anything you feel interested...I will do it at my current school. If I just
take a Phd course in econ during my two-year study at my dept. then 1) I will
miss some wonderful courses of polisci, 2) I cannot get any extra degree...
you see, Chinese are fond of 文凭:)

I'm interested in social choice theory too. Could you be a little more
specific about your ideas? it seems if you're the only one who's buying vote,
then doing the median voter is enough (suppose it's a one-dimential policy
space). But what if you have an opponent who's buying votes as well?
btw, i have the impression that you appear in the econ board a lot. are you an
econ or polisci phd?

看不到凤凰卫视:(
不过感觉上是:理论做得越多,说话就越保守,越说不出个明确答案;上星期一个
研究日本的教授到我们系做lecture,我问日本能复苏么?他滔滔不绝的回答了25分
钟,我用一句话总结一下就是:有可能复苏,也有可能不复苏:(
所以特别仰慕古时的谋士,他们没有学过Polisci,没有学过game theory,什么都
没有学过,可是怎么预言的都那么准啊:)
