reversed his position on same-sex marriage. The reason was that his son had
come out to him and his wife as gay.
This is not the first such instance. Periodically, we hear about Republican
politicians whose child announces that he or she is gay, prompting the
parent to change his mind about the man-woman definition of marriage.

在美国以至整个西方，过去一百年来，一直存在左、右两大理念之争。左派的基本理念
是倾向社会主义，强调“平等”和“均贫富”，推行高税收（把钱从富人和中产阶级那
里强行收来，再分给穷人）、大政府（由政府进行财产二次分配，因此政府规模越来越
大）、高福利（向穷人提供优惠待遇）等政策，在国家力量的主导下，实现社会平等。
右派的基本理念是倾向资本主义，强调“自由”和“竞争”，推行减税（让人民拥有、
支配自己的财富）、小政府（政府只是保护人民安全的“守夜人”，规模越小越好）、
低福利（尽量控制福利，以避免养懒汉）、市场经济（自由竞争、优胜劣败，而不是平
分财富）等政策。
不损害他人的“利己”是文明的源泉
左派理念从来都占据道德高地。因为照顾穷人，把财富分给弱者，体现所谓“善”的价
值。这不仅由于人类自古以来就有“利他就是善”的传统，更在于影响西方文化至深的
《新约圣经》基调是反富的，耶稣说富人进天堂比骆驼穿针眼还难。基督教的反富倾向

to ensure everyone has basics to survive. The poor are already poor, give
