，邻居告诉我，她2月前刚刚去世。癌症。才50出头。十几年教课非常辛苦，很不容易

有种重生的感觉。
又见了几个老师，相见甚欢。吃饭都在抱怨学校。都在忙着搞research，其实早tenure
了，但还这么忙。还知道一个很好的年轻老师没拿到tenure,去了NYU。politics的牺牲
品。
下午去见另一个老师，我曾经ta他的课，土耳其人，很好的老头，chair professor,给
我写过推荐信的. 一聊，说昨天没接电话，因为去医院检查了，一问，又是癌症，说做
了手术，感觉很好，人胖了不少，说医生建议他补充蛋白质。去年因为查出癌症，on
leave一年，明年退休，回土耳其大学教书做研究。我又震惊。我问既然退休，为何不
轻轻松松生活呢。他说一辈子这么努力过来了，hardworking已经是他的second nature
。无法轻松。癌症，退休，还在研究。看来真是兴趣在这阿。我无言。临走说希望有机
会去伊斯坦布尔看他。

sallary -3 months, a little increased sallary.

。曾听一个美国老师说，她看过一个介绍，东方父母赞美孩子，喜欢夸聪明，而美国父
母赞扬的更多的是hardworking。她认为后者是更合适的，鼓励的应该是行为，而不要

你说的这个里面可是有大学问了，就是如何在1）self-discipline/hardworking 和 2
）motivation/creativity里面找到一个合适的balance。在有些情况下，东试试，西试
试，遇到困难就放弃了，说什么都不work。这时候就是需要咬牙，把最难的那一段挺过
来，否则什么都做不出来。另一种情况就是，死磕。一定要把这个捣鼓出来，即使没有
天赋或者这个东西本身意义就不大，最后白浪费了时间精力，还对自己失去了信心。
这是个很难把握的东西，我们老师自己也不是很清楚。有时候我们做课题的时候，也常
常问自己，到底是我用的功夫心血还不够，还是这个东西真的应该停下，因为没有前景
