逛书店的时候这本书摆放显眼，一眼就看到，上面的几行字说 #1 New York Times
Bestseller就买了，花了十六块。亚马逊上Kindle版本十块钱，纸质版的也差不多价钱

买完后花了大约三个多月断断续续看完了。语言简单，有趣，故事耐人寻味。故事梗概
是一出离奇的自杀案后的遗嘱，随之而来的遗产争夺官司。十月份死的人，来年四月份
官司结束，可以说是快刀斩乱麻。
推荐的原因是这本书里有大量的美国南部小镇的生活描写。包括各个阶层，各种种族，

发帖数: 2664 | 6 狄更斯小说的英文版不是那么好读的，我很喜欢他，但他细节太多，情节发展太慢，英
文不是母语的人很容易失去耐心。
如果是为了消遣和练习英文，我自己觉得还是当代流行的悬念小说更好些，因为有悬念可以吸引自己查阅词汇和读到最后。我自己读到的肯定不是最好的，但是我读了John Grisham和Stuart Woods的大部分小说，基本上都没有觉得无聊过。John Grisham文笔很好，清新幽默，Stuart Woods更口语化。
p.s看到ditu原文说不喜欢政治题材，两个人刚好都有涉及。John Grisham名义上是写legal thriller的，但是悬念性很强，情节紧凑，法律程序的介绍只是为了给人物和情节一个背景。我最喜欢的他的小说是The Runaway Jury，但是这部已经拍成电影，如果已经看过了，那我最喜欢的没有拍成电影的是The Partner。
Stuart Woods也写政治，但刑事调查故事写的更多些。我最喜欢New York Dead，很紧凑，整个故事都是悬念，我直到最后才猜到凶手是谁。:) |

favorite writers too, but I stopped reading his legal thriiler novels after
finishing The Last Juror in 2004. It was a very good one. The Broker has
still been on my reading list yet given a low priority. As for Stuart Woods,
I read his Short Straw, a smooth flow writing. It was OK, but I like
reading fast pace mystery novels better. His books are attractive to the

creek的房子现在很不好买，基本出来的房子都是2天之内以高出listing的价格pending
。如果没孩子可以等到下半年再看看。
Anderson mill那边的房子不能买，那里基本没有中国人，白人也少。canyon creek的
neol grisham中学之所以评分不高就是因为anderson mill小学上来的学生成绩不好。
不过neol grisham中学两极分化，据说top 75%跟canyon vista没有大的差别。

800多页，属于没法垫桌脚，两本当枕头的那种。从名字上就可以明显看出这本书里最
大的坑是1963年发生在达拉斯的Kennedy遇刺事件。对于那个时代的baby boomer来说，
这次成功的刺杀远远不仅仅是历史书上的一次事件，而是刻骨铭心亲身经历的人生感悟
和现实生活的巨大转折。用Stephen King自己的话来说 ，"11/22/63 was our 9/11."
King自称从1972年就尝试写这本书了，可是据称由于需要大量的素材采集和积累，加上
他那个时候全职教书，所以没有写下去，而且10年的时间不足以充分让这件事情的影响
沉淀。 40年以后，他的名气和资本足以使用足够的资源去收集资料和现场考察了，而
且baby boomer们老的也快也只能抱着书本唏嘘了，所以这书也就水到渠成了。其实
King还是或多或少的有一点点利用了那一代美国人的肯尼迪情结。无论电台的采访还是

games就差一些了，到了the sum of all fears就是在胡扯。基本规律就是Jack
Ryan的官升的越大书就越难读，到了最后一本Jack当上美国总统了，就看见旧书
店里面1块5一本暂新的堆得满堆都没人要。
单纯要读小说练英语打发时间的话，John Grisham的律师系列，Frederick Forsyth
的间谍系列都很好，至少平均水平比Tom clancy的Jack Ryan系列要强。而且John
Grisham是律师出身，干过州议员；Forsyth自己是英国特别空勤团出身；写这些
东西都很顺手，也比较真实。
如果除了联系英语打发时间之外，还想学习一下好的英语应该如何写的话，就要
考虑看一些名著了。比如呼啸山庄，比如Tomas Hardy的两部经典Tess和Jude
the obscure。

2010年5月14日，两个多星期的艰苦JURY TIAL终于结束。由于一个本来简单的案件被搅
得很复杂，陪审团长考三天之后，才做出判决。法庭书记员宣布陪审团判决结果后，部
分陪审团成员回到法庭，与我们进行了短暂的交谈。我特别感兴趣的是，陪审团做出裁
决的过程。无疑，他们是认真负责的，而且曾经进行过激烈的讨论，这从他们过去几天
的表情就可以看出来。
有人说，一个审判的结果在挑选陪审团的时候就已经结束了。JOHN GRISHAM 小说里经
常描写诉讼双方如何耗费巨资和大量时间调查陪审团候选人，已确保有利。但至少在我
经历的联邦法院，双方都只有20分钟时间询问陪审团候选人，并只有四次排除候选人的
机会。因此小说描写的情节，几乎是不可能的。
由于硅谷亚裔人口众多，候选人中亚裔自然占了相当比例。由于我是中国人，被告集中
使用其否则权，把所有名字像中国人的全部排除了。而我方主要是根据候选人的工作经
历和文化程度作出决定。因为涉知识产权，我们希望学历较高的陪审团。硅谷本来就是
一个平均学历很高的地区，经过挑选之后，剩下的人水平相当高，有软件开发人员，有

瓜型步骤里都有，不懂电脑的反而更不可能不配置加密，第二，这年头警察也懂open
wi-fi的危险，不是光geo-locate个IP就去踢门，还要在周围site survey看看是不是邻
居在盗用，否则像这小说里这么蛮干的，不被老头告破产。。。 |

美国总统特朗普赦免两名被控在阿富汗犯有战争罪行的美国军人，并恢复一名被降级的
海军海豹突击队队员的军阶。有报道说，美国国防官员曾劝他不要这样做。
特朗普总统15日对陆军中尉洛伦斯（Clint Lorance）和陆军少校戈尔斯坦（Mathew
Golsteyn）进行了赦免。洛伦斯曾下令士兵向三名平民开枪，被判二级谋杀罪成立；戈
