must have been close to 20 years since I attended one
of their concerts, which was held—quite appropriately—
in a Gothic-style church instead of a theater. One might
say that the other two versions of the song put more
spirit of the spring into the performance, but to me,
nobody captures the "medievalness" of medieval music
better than those four extraordinary ladies. |

音乐厅Humphrey's Concerts的座椅弄得湿润一片。望着音乐厅外面停得密密麻麻的游
轮桅杆，海风把一阵阵奢华的气息吹进来，很难想象我是要在这么一个地方来聆听Dead
Can Dance。
来到圣地亚哥刚好两月，偶然翻看DCD的网站，才知道在九月27日晚上7点半要来这儿演
出。赶紧上网买票，苦等两天之后终于等到重售，票价加起来将近80刀，真正是在抢钱
。一个朋友开车带我到了音乐厅，门口一群红男绿女，穿着打扮各式各样，有适合去
Gothic的，有适合去Classic的，也有适合去Pop的，不知道为什么DCD的歌迷差别会这
么大。当然，其中还有一个青年音乐爱好者，穿着打扮不伦不类，混迹其中，那就是鄙
人。由于到的时候已经是7点20过，进去以后Lisa和Brendan已经登场，大群听众还在找
座位。掌声、口哨声、呼声响成一片。找到座位坐下来，第一首歌已经开始。跟其它演
唱会几乎一模一样，又是Nierika。Lisa身着一袭明黄色的长袍，灯光照耀下恍若圣女

Both Jamiaca Inn and Wuthering Heights were set in an isolated place in wild
moor. But I'd rank WH much higher. JI is melodramaish and drags in romance.
I'd have liked it better if I had read it in teenager years rather than in mid
of twenties when gothic romance is no longer exotic to me. WH is the kinda

1998年，我怀着文青梦，心心念念要考某大陆名校的英语语言文学系（原来打算考历史
系和文科基地班，老师父母劝阻，理由是将来就业会成问题，遂放弃），也考进了，十
年后还留在系里，求到份教职。十五年过去，山山水水看得渐渐清晰。
要交待一句，我在同一家大学的英文系，从本科念到博士，成绩始终不好不坏。留校后
，职业发展则是同辈中比较落后的。所以，体制内，我不能算既得利益派，心怀怨望，
发发牢骚很正常。而且，我素来偏激，年纪不小，依旧出言轻狂。尊敬的读者请务必注
意：在主流价值日渐遭 到怀疑的时代，牢骚、轻狂不一定是对的，需要批评看待。
本学期开学时，开明的领导组织我们开会，畅议教学改革的方向与步骤，当时我有一点
粗浅的想法。加之最近因为教学与两位师长发生小小误会，有所触动。所以，趁周末，

Sopor Aeternus，拉丁语，意为永恒沉睡或死亡沉睡，又指那些徘徊在地狱大门外，没
接引收留的孤魂野鬼。他们的肉身早已腐烂，灵魂却没有归宿，只能在无人的夜晚游荡
在墓地，唱那些哀伤的歌。他们被称为阴影演出者（the Ensemble of Shadows）。
与其说Sopor Aeternus是一支乐队，不如将其看作一个来 自德国的神秘的哲学家团体
。核心Anna-Varney(原名Varney)，一个有易性倾向的思想家，他的音乐里包涵的那种
对黑暗的向往、抑郁且扭曲的思想意识，那 “比黑暗更加黑暗”的歌词和旋律， 有着

来自地狱的猛兽，只不过吸血鬼和 werewolves 换成了河马。河马在晨雾的掩护下悄悄
出发，突然一只河马象是发现了什么，抬起头警觉的看过来，大嘴带出的水珠和鼻孔喷
出的水汽带来阵阵寒意，背景的阴沉加深了恐惧的感觉。
2. 非洲的编织鸟在筑巢，它的名字很怪，不知怎么来的 Baglafecht weaver
3. 银河下的马赛人。这张是在半夜2：30am左右在马赛马拉大草原上拍的，大伙凑钱请
马赛人在四周警卫狮子，hyena，豹子。
4. 贴这张照片时，正好听到“萍聚”这首歌，就叫它 Northern gannet 的“萍聚”吧
，将来我为这对鸟再另出组图。

哥德式建築（英语：Gothic architecture），或譯作哥特式建築，是一種興盛於中世
紀高峰與末期的建築風格。它由羅曼式建築發展而來，為文藝復興建築所繼承。
發源於十二世紀的法國，持續至十六世紀，哥德式建築在當代普遍被稱作「法國式」（
Opus Francigenum），「哥德式」一詞則於文藝復興後期出現，帶有貶意。哥德式建築
的特色包括尖形拱門、肋狀拱頂與飛拱。
哥德式建築的整體風格為高聳削瘦，以卓越的建築技藝表現了神秘、哀婉、崇高的強烈
情感，對後世其他藝術均有重大影響。哥德式大教堂等無價建築藝術已列入聯合國教科
文組織的世界遺產，其也成了一門關於主教座堂和教堂的研究。

Then, somewhere along the line, I started hearing this word "gothic. " I felt
like, Wow, I'm a part of something new that's happening. But now, it's been so
many years. A lot of the younger kids that I run into nowadays, I'll mention
Black Sabbath or Alice Cooper, and they're like, "Who?" And it's like, this
has been going a lot longer than you know.

ASTBURY: When did it end? Probably about '84, '85 the latest. Then you started
having jangly guitar bands, and it was all very dull. The word "gothic" now is
really sort of a joke, quite kitschy. The funny thing is that a lot of people
would never acknowledge being into those bands, but I was talking to Courtney
Love and she said she was at one of our shows in 1984 at the Camden Palace.
You never know what kind of influence that could have had. There's your roots
