On June 2, the Environmental Protection Agency is going to announce new
rules for existing coal-fired power plants, most likely a 20 percent
reduction in allowable carbon dioxide emissions. The only way this will be
possible will be by upgrading almost all combustion units, and the ultimate
cost of the upgrades will make coal noncompetitive with much-less-expensive
natural gas–fired facilities.

人的记忆都不一样，愿意选择的与选择写出来的又不一样。所以写作像是一个futile
effort。futility, waste，这些主题我觉得t.s. eliot笔下常有，现代性文学常有。
但结尾是肯定朋友写的童年，那就不是整个都futile，写作还是有存在的意义和积极的
作用。
futility这个词对我来说总是很触心。不知道你们看小说有没有这种感觉，有些词一下
子就能抓住你。我们以前学过一学期的o henry prize stories，都是短篇，大部分看
过就忘。但其中有一篇，反复用了个inadequate的词，我记得很牢很牢。我找到以前灌
水讲的这个词了：

的终末期治疗上，比如终末期癌症的治疗，irreversible disease care, ICU care,
很多这样的care是futile的，但花费巨大。如果能限制这类疾病的开支会节省不少钱。
比如说，如果一个95岁的肺癌晚期，预期寿命不超过2个月了（只是例子），如果自掏
腰包的话大部分家属就会放弃极端治疗而选择对症治疗注重提高最后2个月生活质量的
治疗，现实是相反的，因为是Medicare, 自己不掏钱，家属或病人本人就会要求do
everything, 很多化疗药很贵的，即便已经住进ICU,插管了，还是要求do everything.

据香港《大公报》网站12月6日援引外电报道，绝大部分美国人对《国防授权法案
》获美国参院通过的新闻一无所知，因为美国主流媒体不约而同地对此新闻选择沉默，
就连平时热衷*河蟹*的美联社、《纽约时报》等也对《国防授权法案》如何侵犯美国公
民权利的事实只字不提。
报道称，美国只有少数非主流媒体如“Business Insider”、《连线》杂志和《基
督教科学箴言报》对法案提出了质疑，其他广播媒体则不愿意报道《国防授权法案》。
“Business Insider”一名编辑日前向三大有线新闻网络的督制和主播发电邮，希望他
们报道此事，但他们却没有任何人愿意挺身而出。
这项立法授权规定：
